Crean comfortable with blueprint to return Indiana to top

The first question was a simple question.

How you doing, man?

"I'm great," answered new Indiana coach Tom Crean. "I'm doing better than most people think."

So there you have it, Indiana fans.

Your coach is just fine -- relaxed, excited and dealing with adversity without blinking. It's not easy, mind you. Let's not kid ourselves. But your coach knew he was inheriting a mess when he inherited this mess, and though it might be a little messier than he expected it's still something he figures he can clean.

"It's a long-haul job," Crean acknowledged by phone Thursday. "But it's such a great tradition and a great job that we're going to be able to recover."

Crean called Thursday after a morning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"I was supposed to wave the flag to start the practice round," he said. "But we had too much rain."

In other words, the day didn't go quite as planned. So it was a fitting day in many ways. Or at least consistent with the theme of Crean's first five weeks at Indiana -- five weeks of dismissals and transfers and shakeups in general that will ultimately provide IU basketball with a new foundation on which to build.

You know those people who buy houses and immediately rip up the floor because the carpet is stained and stinks beyond belief? Crean is one of those people. That's what he has done and is still doing at IU. So if you walk into his house right now, yes, it might look rough because the new hardwood floors that will replace the stained carpet aren't yet in place.

This in-depth house cleaning is a necessary component to the rebuilding process, and the only bad part is that it'll likely get worse before it gets better considering there are now only three scholarship players set to return from last season's Indiana team that finished 25-8.

Did you get that?

Just three scholarship players will be back.

Being a native of Cincinnati as well as a graduate of IU, I can't help but compare the plight of the two schools recently in regard to their basketball programs.  Both lost high-profile troubled coaches that could obviously coach, but had a tough time following the rules.  Both have a rich history of basketball success.  Both play in tough leagues and were seriously crippled ...(more)

I am willing to give up a couple years of winning to see Indiana return to respectability.  Hopefully the Indiana faithful get behind this guy and this team.  HOPEFULLY the powers-that-be at IU can be patient as well.

Although I really admire what Tom Crean is doing to rebuild the program, I really think this will be a tough year for Indiana when it comes to wins and losses. How many wins do you this Indiana team will get this season? (overall wins, not just conference wins)

I live in Indiana, but I am not an IU.  There is so much coverage on this team where I live and believe me when I tell you people are not very optimistic about this team and I agree with them.  On the outside looking in, I think this team is in trouble.  The near future doesn't look good, however I do think Crean can do good things a couple of years down the road.  Hang ...(more)

All I can say is Good Luck IU, Crean will bring in some same but he will lose many too, becasue the guy is an arrogant and two-faced a*&.  He sounds good in the media, and in the public but he can be a jerk and if you look at all of the close games Marquette was in, he is not all that great of a late game or close game coach.   Just wait to see how many clsoe games IU ...(more)

IU is IU, and basketball is about the only thing they have there, outside of the Colts in Indy.  I love seeing the Tom Izzo coaching tree blossom.  Give the program 3 solid years of recruiting, and they'll be back.  I liken this instance to UNC under coach Dougherty.  The tradition was there, but the talent and coaching was not.  Now look at UNC under Roy Williams.& ...(more)
