Coming out of chemo.....

Posted on: February 16, 2008 2:23 pm

Okay I had to have another round of chemo this week, and a few stories accumulated while I recovered...this was one of the ones that has caught my eye, and I just need to comment:

Smoky bar triggered deadly asthma attack

Fri Feb 8, 2008 6:11pm EST

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A woman in her late teens died from an acute asthma attack triggered by secondhand cigarette smoke shortly after arriving at her job as a waitress in a bar in Michigan, researchers reported on Friday.

They said it was the first reported case of an immediate death caused by secondhand smoke.

"She didn't have any other possible known causes of death," said Dr. Kenneth Rosenman, a Michigan State University professor who oversees three state public health surveillance systems.

Cigarette smoke is known to trigger acute asthma attacks.

"We know that particulate levels from secondhand cigarette smoke in bars like this reach sufficient levels to set off an asthma attack," Rosenman said.

He said the woman was a student who had a job at a fast-food restaurant, and worked a second job as a waitress at the bar. "She was perfectly fine when she went to work," Rosenman said in a telephone interview.

"After about 15 minutes, she had an acute asthma attack and collapsed on the floor. The autopsy clearly indicates she died from asthma," said Rosenman, who would not disclose the woman's name or the precise place and time of her death for privacy reasons.

Rosenman said the woman had asthma since age 2. Her asthma was poorly controlled. She had made four visits to her doctor in the year before her death for flare-ups, and had been treated in a hospital emergency department two to three times that year.

Although she had prescriptions for an assortment of drugs to prevent and treat asthma attacks, she was reported to only use them when she was having breathing difficulty.

On the evening of her death, she had no inhaler with her. When she became sick, she told the bar manager she needed to go to the hospital, then collapsed on the dance floor.

Bar patrons offered an inhaler and the woman tried to use it, but could not. Emergency response workers were unable to revive her and she died shortly thereafter.

Rosenman, who wrote about the case in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, said 24 U.S. states prohibit smoking in public places such as bars. A number of other states, including Michigan, are considering it.

He said a smoking ban could prevent future deaths.

Secondhand smoke causes about 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 46,000 heart disease deaths in adult non-smokers in the United States each year, according to the American Lung Association.

"There are a lot of statistics out there about secondhand smoke. Here is a human face. She died acutely. It is a tragic death," Rosenman said.

The study was funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Okay, this story has received a fair amount of attention by the anti-smoking crowd. They are pushing it as proof of how deadly second-hand smoke is. Give me a break!  Let's take a closer look at some details: 1) Asthma since age 2, but yet decided to work in a "smoky" bar. 2) Prescriptions for the ailment, but didn't use them properly 3) Went to work in the "smoky" bar...didn't bring inhaler 4) Four doctors visits, 2-3 ER visits in the past year....What was triggering these attacks? 5) To quote the article.."Cigarette smoke is known to trigger acute asthma attacks", well that is true, but I refer you to this list of other possible triggers:  http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/UVAHealth/adult_allergy/astrigs.cfm This is simply another piece of propaganda that turns a story of half-truths and innuendo into fact in the eyes of many. What killed this waitress?  The reflection in her mirror.

Coming out of chemo.....

Jak......first of all, I want to wish you luck in your fight. I'm not going to try to imagine what you have to endure, because I have had no one close to me that has had to do what you do.

I'm glad I read your blog, because my first thought was, this guy has cancer, he's against smoking, bla, bla, bla. I should have known better coming from you. I also believe that people are responsible for their own actions. I've heard stories where someone moved next to train tracks, then wanted them to move it because the trains were too loud. Hello? If you don't like the sound of the trains, don't buy a house next to one.

When I read your blog, it reminded me of a pic that I saved, so I looked it up and found that it was a news story from 'The Roanoke Times', dated Monday, Setember 20, 2004. Apparently there was road construction in front of her house, so the newspaper came out and did a story about it, and included a picture of her. The caption read.......Mellisa Williamson, 35, a Bullitt Avenue resident, worries about the effect of her unborn child from the sound of jackhammers.

The picture is of her, quite pregnant, with a cigarette in her hand.

Coming out of chemo.....

Thanks Plaid for the wishes, I've been fighting this off and on for almost 8 years now, sometimes things are good....sometimes not. In all honesty, things have really never looked quite as bleak as they currently do, but we'll see.

On the blog entry, it brings to mind a situation from about 16 years ago. It was at the tail end of my days as a active "touring" musician. One of my best friends, Tony , and I were doing some studio work. He decided to go home to North dakota for the weekend and was killed in an accident when a semi driver fell asleep on I94. A couple of weeks later, I went to help his fiance' Amy pack up her belongings because she had decided to move back to N.D. to be closer to her family. The morning I went to their apartment, I found her hanging in the bathroom after committing suicide. When I had to call her family and tell them the news, I never once said that the rope was to blame.

Point being that it was a tragic occurence, but all of the actions that Amy took were ultimately hers.
