Hockey: The Sport Of The Underdog

Hockey...I love it. I live and die with each win and loss. My team is the Detroit Red Wings and has been since I started playing Sega around '90. Yzerman Rocked.

I grew up in southern NJ, suburb of Philadelphia. I attending many games of the Flyboys. Nothing better. My parent used to take my friends and I to "the Coliseum" in Voorhees where the Flyers actually practiced. We would spend our (parent's) money logging ice time in the open skate sessions all the time. Getting our skates sharpened at "Skater's Edge," a tiny little pro shop that you had to walk up a seemingly endless flight of stairs to get to. The foundation for what is to come is built in our youth.

I watch hockey. Not just the Wings. Hockey.

The NHL wants to expand their culture. Fine. Ratings say no one watches. Fine with me. I love it and know people that feel the same way. The majority of people think of hockey as a fringe sport. Fine by me. That doesn't affect my pleasure, in fact knowing what others choose to ignore gives me satisfaction. They are the ones missing out.

Go ahead, put a game on...I'll watch with you.

Ive played hockey at EVERY level since I was 3 (about 28 years)... I also coach and have a coaching minor from college... I also have a Level 5 USA coaching cert. which is the highest coaching cert. you can obtain in the US... also... I am from Michigan and have been a Red Wings fan since before it was 'cool'... Steve Yzerman has been my absolute hero every year since he was playing for the Peterborough Petes... he is AMAZING... I even went to his retirement game and after party... it is AWESOME there is people like you out there... makes me keep faith in the sport and the team and player that has never let me down... God bless...

Hockey: The Sport Of The Underdog

I know where you are coming from, what a great blog.I too have spent alot of time at the coliseum in Vorhees.Preseason practices were great with all the young guys there flying around the old vets. But as you are ,I too am a fan of hockey first, and don't care what others say,it is their loss, they are missing out on an exciting sport.Thats cool your a Red Wings fan,in s.jersey,i grew up with the broad street bullies, dating my self, but ended up becoming a fan of the Maple Leafs, not easy wearing the visitors jersey to a game, but hey being a hockey fan and playing the game, its all part of the pation of the sport. But great blog look forward to more.

Hockey: The Sport Of The Underdog

I appreciate everyones comments. Good  to see other fellow fans out there.  Having spent some time in New England and the Mid West, I know we're out there. Heck like I mentioned before, I'm in southern NJ and some of the high schools have some teams now. Hockey isgrowing, maybe not at the pace Gary Bettman would like but hockey is growing...you just have to take a look.
