NHL Playoffs: Detroit vs Colorado

Round 2 Begins Tonight

What can be said of this series that hasn't been said already? About rekindling the "old rivalry."

The history of these two teams made the NHL "must see" television in the late '90's. Sure, maybe there's no Lemieux (Turtle) or Roy, but there's still enough players on both teams that should hopefully make this another classic.

With a few days off for the teams to heal their bangs and bruises, they should be ready to go at a frantic pace. Neither team has any serious injuries to report. My biggest concern here is Brad Stuart going back to LA to be with his wife who is expected to deliver. I'm thinking he could have planned that a little better. I'm sure he thought he'd still be with the Kings and he'd already be on vacation, but c'mon man...It's the playoffs

That being said, the Red Wings should be alright on defense as long as Kronwall stays healthy. The Avalanche has their power play unit going real well in the first round. The Minnesota Wild are a good team...Detroit is an excellent team.

My only other real concern is Detroit's power play. Holmstrom needs to do what he does best (park in front of the net) and we should get some good rebounds.

There has been countless words of the "bad blood " between these two teams, it will hard to live up to hype...but I think it will.

Go Wings Go!

This just in Stuart's wife had a bouncing baby boy...he'll practice with the team Friday and play in Saturday's matinee.

NHL Playoffs: Detroit vs Colorado

I'm with you Jak. It will be hard for these two teams of now to relive the old rivalry as well as live up to the hype. I still feel it will be a hard fought series. The Wings were 4-0-0 against the Avs this season. I know everyone says you can't carry that over into the playoffs but it means something in my book. It will by no means will  be an easy series but I think the Red Wings will do it in 5 games or 6 tops. That is as long as Osgood is in net, Holmstrom camps in front of Theodore, and our defense stays strong. None of the 2 quick goals in multiple games like they did against the Preds. As far as offense goes our number of shots has been there. Ellis is just an awesome goalie. Period.  Man I'm excited about tonight as well as the whole series. Go Wings!

NHL Playoffs: Detroit vs Colorado

I have looked forward to this series before it even happened. I almost wished it was the Conference Finals though, because I feel that no matter who wins, the intensity of the next round for the winner's fans will not equal what has been going on so far days. It's only been 2 days since we learned what the matchup will be, and already there are countless Wings and Avs fans clamoring to get this thing started. I predicted the Wings in 6 very close games, and see no reason why that doesn't change. I expect it to be a hard-fought, tough, grinding series, and hope that the winner emerges relatively healthy so they can move on (unless the Avs win, in which case I want them to get swept next round).

BTW, I will never knock a guy for being with his wife when she gives birth to their child. Very few things are more important than playoff hockey, but a new child is one of them.

NHL Playoffs: Detroit vs Colorado

A bit of a rollercoaster ride for game one. The Detroit Red Wings fell behind early to the Colorado Avalanche 1-0. Then a 4 goal explosion for the Red Wings.

Chasing Jose Theodore from the net won't help his confidence.  With Peter Budaj playing so well in relief, Jose has to feel the pressure to start strong in game two...or he'll get the hook again

Colorado will play stronger next game from the start, that's a given.  Peter Forsberg (Floppa) should play if not he'd really be letting his teammates down.

Detroit completely dominated at times during this game.  They just need a full sixty minutes.  If they do they'll be heading to Denver up 2-0.
