I really don't understand why there's such a thing as a closer. Why doesn't baseball do what they did years ago.... keep the current reliever in the game because he's throwing stuff that the opposing team just can't figure-out.
When did this all start? [ anybody have any ideas? ]
Who came up with this concept..?? Does any team have a *lights-out* closer..??
We here in Cleveland have had Jose Mesa, Bob Wickman, and now Joe Borowski .... all of which we fans have NEVER had much confidence. In fact they all looked like they were in fear for their lives when out on the mound.
The way I see this closer role is, if you have a *great* reliever, a guy you know is totally un-hittable, then make him your closer. There's only a couple that come to mind (Rivera, Thigpen, Eckersly, Gagne). John Rocker from Atlanta was one of those till he went off the deep end.
But I still ask the questions: WHY DO WE HAVE THEM..? WHEN DID THIS START..? WHO STARTED ALL THIS..?? IS THIS JUST A PHASE IN BASEBALL RIGHT NOW..??
Till next time . . . Stay Well, and See You Somewhere, I Hope. . .
