I'd like to get some good discussion started about issues that are on our minds everyday. We are all passionate about our beliefs but remember to be respectful of others as well. There is a decent discussion about anger on the prayer thread, but it is a place of refuge and peace and prayer. This is a format for open discussion where you can feel free to disagree - respectfully. Not limited to Christians - so be nice. I'll list a couple topics on my mind:

- How and when do you know you you have the baptism of the Holy Spirit

- In Jesus name - or Trinity

- Does the bible speak differently to each of us - or is there only one meaning

- Does free will mean we are pre-destined and are the "elect" the only ones going to heaven

Obviously there are endless topics to discuss and ask questions about. At last count there were over 2800 Christian denominations registered with the IRS. Each one lays claim to some bit of doctrine or interpretation of the bible that sets them apart. So to start off I ask the question "Is doctrine critical to salvation?"

That's a very good question BengalBuck. I don't think any of us can profess to know what exactly God will do, or who he will give salvation. We know from the Bible what we should do. However, none of us can earn salvation. This is a gift God chooses to give to us.

I feel comforted knowing that God will always do what is righteous. It reminds me of the example of Abraham when he was talking to God, and kept asking if there were only a certain amount of righteous people in a city of evildoers would he do what's right and not destroy the good people. He started with a large number and kept asking God using a smaller and smaller number, and each time God said he'd do what's right. This interests me, because although we don't know who will get slavation, we know God will do what's right. Only God can read our hearts, and know the 'inner person.' I truly believe God will do what's right and save those who have good hearts, regardless of what doctrine they happen to follow.

Now I'm not trying to be too general and say all religions are pathways to the same God. I would have no way to know this, although I find it hard to believe it's is true. All I know is that God will do the right thing, and save good-hearted people, and this comforts me immensely.

Hope to hear the rest of your views!

Personally I don't think doctrine is critical for salvation. Of the 2800 denominations I quoted above, I believe over half of those believe they are the only ones going to heaven! Why do we have so many divisions in Christianity. Is it money or membership? Is it even necessary to go to church in order to be saved?

Way to much to chew in your first set of questions, so I'd just like to jump in with your last comment about doctrine and salvation. I do believe there are some beliefs (doctrines) essential for salvation through Jesus Christ (for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved Acts 4:13):

1. Jesus was born of a virgin

2. He lived a sinless life

3. He died upon the cross for our sin

4. He was buried and rose from the dead

5. If we will trust Him to save us He will.

I don't believe that a denomination will get you to heaven, though I am Baptist and happy to be so. I don't see where I could ever earn or deserve my salvation, as anything good in me is from God, not from me. Salvation belongs to the LORD, and He gives it as a gift to us. I know I am saved ... not because I know it all (I DON'T) but because nothing as big as God can move in and you not know it. I know I am saved becasue He promised to save me if I called upon Him, and He has never failed in a promise (Romans 10:13 Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.).

Bengalbuck - If you understood Calvinism, you would know the answer to your last question.  Most of your other questions do not seem to have human answers.  Doctrine and salvation are two separate issues, as doctrine is usually associated with a particular church, and not with the Bible directly.  Doctrine is not equal to the Bible: you have Catholic Doctrine, Anglican Doctrine, etc.  Is not salvation made clear in the Bible and other teachings of God?  C'mon, Razorwolf, post massively on the Doctrine off Spurgeon and the Baptist church again.  I am non-denominational and believe wholly in the teachings of the Bible.

Fishbobber:
I've read some things lately that say not only are we saved by our faith in Jesus' death and resurrection, but also by faith in Jesus baptism by John. That Jesus' baptism transfered the sins of mankind into Jesus so through His death he could "bury" them. Any thoughts on that?
