here is the skinny on calipari.
how do I know? I am (was) a HUGE kendall gill fan.
Now, hear me out, you may be thinking, so, who the hell is kendall gill? just a washed up former player.
Well, in 1989, Kendall Gill, as a junior, led (along with Nick , sorry blanking on his last name, and another guy, who ddn't make NBA) to the NCAA Semi Finals. They had beaten Michigan, led by 6'7" Michigan star Glen Rice. twice during Big 10 season.
then, in semifinals, Michigan won on a last second tip in, and Michigan went to finals and beat Seton Hall on two last second ft's
by Rumeal Robinson, who then went on to a less than stellar NBA career, mostly with Atlanta.
The coach of Seton Hall was none other than pj carlisimo, who was a LOT LIKE Calipari, very hands on, yelled a lot and
eventually, at Golden State 3 or so years later, got into SPREWELL's head so much that SPRE choked him, twice, and the rest,
as they say , is history.
Anyway, you many be saying, yea, so what?
Well, Kendall Gill went on, in his senior year, to be all american, first team, and was drafted 5th by Charlotte, where he played
two or three years with Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, They were headed for a POSSIBLE dynasty type of situation, at least
talent wise, when Kill was traded to Seattle for 3 point shooter_____________ from Bradley. Mourning and Johnson didn't last much longer at Charlotte. The word was Gill was too much like Marbury, selfish, not sure about the truth on that claim.
NOw, eventually, Gill ended up with New Jersey....with Calipari as Coach. For 3 years they were together and calipari, though
he improved the Nets team, the Nets were always lousy. One year Gill was their only scoring option and he averaged,
as a 6'5" "small" forward...21 points per game. Needless to say, they had no other options. eventually, with Jason Williams
and marbury and Sam Cassell, they became respectable, and Gill was "morphed" into more of a strong, but small, forward-guard who
could play defense (he holds the record, tied last year, for most steals in an NBA game........11, yea, (no misprint.)
All that is to say, Calipari was and still is a YELLER. He works at Memphis because
1) He has young players.
2) He has grown, in that he shows more respect for his players.
3) The players cycle, go away, etc. from Memphis after 1, 2 or 3 years....
4) The players know they don't have to listen, forever, to Calipari and his yelling on the bench.
5) He doesn't have NBA guys, who fo
