Yeah , what Obama said is true, some Americans are to blind to look past their AK 47 or the mind-numbing sunday NASCAR jamboree.YEEHAW . They let the NRA tell them who to vote for. Totally ignorant of the more important problems this counrty faces. I don't want to give up any of my 16 firearms either ,but that is not what I'm going to base my vote on. Most gun laws are levied on the state level, and the worst thing a democrat pres. would do is try to reinact the Brady bill. I am against any restrictive firearm laws, however the economy ,fuel prices, the environment, the deficit, inflation , global warming and the millions of good jobs that are being liquidated from the U.S. are my biggest concerns.

The reason companies are moving jobs overseas is because we all insist on it. Think about it honestly for a moment.
Everyone wants more, more, more. The unions want more pay, more benefits, etc... This costs money. If you insist on being paid $60,000 per year, and requiring your employer to pay for your families health care, and fund your retirement accounts, and you want "Big Industry" to pay more in taxes, and you want to regulate them for the highest safety standards in the world, and make them comply with the strictest environmental laws in the world, and etc... then you have to be productive enough to overcome the added burden on the companies.
The stock holders also want a better return on their investments so they can retire at some point and not count on the broken social security system. The stock holders insist that companies provide a decent return on investment or they seek other companies that will provide a better return. This drives companies to produce more and reduce costs.
We all want the best deals for our hard earned dollars (those of us that earned them anyway). So we drive our Japanese cars down to BP (British Petroleum) to get gas, while sipping our Columbian coffee, and wearing our Korean shoes, we go to Wal-Mart to buy the Chinese made toys for our kids.
If you want jobs to stay in America we have to be productive enough to compete in the global market. We have to make it more profitable for companies to do business here. We have to be more productive, provide better infrastructure, more stability, better technology, etc…
And if you weren’t actually read that article rather than looking for justification for your position, you would have seen the opening sentence “There is no doubt most of oil's huge price leap -- up 40% in the past year, to $45 a barrel -- is grounded in fundamental supply-and-demand issues.” The speculators are speculating on what future oil prices are going to be. They have no way to distribute oil and no way to store oil. As the article clearly stated "If [speculators] do a bad job of predicting the markets, they will lose money. If they do a good job of predicting the markets, they make money."

Great post Dan. That is the problem in America. "more, more, more" At what point is enough, enough? 3 Houses, or maybe 4? Is 10 cars enough? What about CEO salaries? I know we live in a capitalist society but at some point $30, $40, $50 million a year salaries become a joke and it is now a race to see which CEO can take home the biggest check. If companies want to cut costs Why dont they look in the mirror instead of cutting pensions, salaries, benefits or jobs. After all it is the American worker who made you what you are. How about show a little appreciation? Loyalty in American business is not dead, the loyalty to the company is there when the company shows loyalty to its workers. Its a two way street. I show my loyalty by showing up on time for 5 years and take the minimum yearly salary increase, you show yours by not shipping my job overseas.

Dan is not off the mark at all. And I am a democrat. The issue comes with trade deals though. The trade deals are like a card game when you have a partner on the other side of the table. You and your partner have all the trump cards and they (your opponents) have cards to play with, but certainly you have the upper hand. Your partner tells you to give your opponents two trump cards so it can be a little better game. You aren't in a position to argue so you have to give them up. In the meantime you can't get a trick your partner gets his three and the other team gets two. Then your partner can't quite understand why you can't uphold your end of the game. (i.e. "fair" trade deals) Without some sort of balanced playing field in regard to worker compensation and safety issues, the United States will continue to lose the ground it has gained. I'm not saying that unions haven't gone beyond in deals. I don't understand how autoworkers with a GED can earn $100,000 with benefits without working a great deal of overtime. However, the housing situation can be tied to the lack of good paying jobs and the decrease in personal family income. True, there has also been a "over-building" in the market, but the recession is directly related to many of the trade deals that really have FORCED business out of the United State. I don't blame the business for doing this. Business is about making money and they should have the ability to do that to the level the law allows. However when our goods going to say Argentina get a 21% duty attached, but Argentine goods have NO duty, no minimum wage, no workers rights, no laws on business practices... well, I think that American workers need to demand more from our elected officials than that kind of treatment. Unfortunately, we get too easily distracted with soundbites on knee jerk issues. If anyone REALLY wants to understand good solid economic, but PRO_ AMERICAN view of economics put away the Glen Beck and Ann Coulter and pick up George Will. A conservative that is interested in the full economic picture. By that I mean that we are sitting at the same table as teammates in this global economy and if we as Americans forget one another (i.e. the employer/labor relationship) we will fail. We will either not be able to sustain our global wealth (as seen in the faltering dollar) or we will be selling off this country to the lowest bidder.

However, the housing situation can be tied to the lack of good paying jobs and the decrease in personal family income.
I pretty much agree with everything else you are saying, but I have to disagree on this point. The housing situation is not because of lack of good paying jobs or low family income. It is because of the artificially low interest rates the fed kept from the 2001 "recession". This caused many families and speculators to jump into the market and bid up houses to astronomical prices. The bidding wars prompted builders to jump on board causing the "over building"
The housing bubble was caused by
1.) lax credit standards
2.) 100% financing (what happend to down payments)
3.) Liar Loans
4.) Wacky loan terms
5.) Greed (on every level, bankers, brokers, sellers and buyers)
Personal Family Income is there, we have just overextended ourselves. We live in houses we can barely afford. We have two or three cars. Huge McMansions and Starter Castles that cost a fortune to heat and cool. I doubt anyone crying that they are living paycheck to paycheck have even thought to sit down and come up with a family budget! Americans chasing the American dream with scenes of "Lifestyles of the rich and famous" playing in their head, have forgotten how to live frugally.

Good point coach. I didn't speak to trade agreements because most people don't understand them, how they impact our economy, or which party or individual was for or against and particular trade agreement. Bill Clinton pushed for NAFTA but apparently Hillary doesn't like it. I personally haven't read it completely so I can't speak to it intelligently.
In general, our trade agreements need to be fair to both parties. This would mean that we insist free-trade is only given to countries that respect the environment and enforce regulations that protect it. We should also require that countries respect and enforce copyright laws and intellectual property rights. We need to consider the workers and working conditions. While it's not our place to attempt to intervene or impose our standards on other country's, it is our place to restrict trade with countries that use slave labor (children & prisoners). We should also insist on tariffs or import taxes to cover the cost of inspecting cargo ships and other imports for national security purposes. Most countries (including the US) subsidize various goods and services which lead to artificially deflated prices and unfair trade advantages. All of these things and many others need to be considered by those negotiating our trade deals. Free trade, when done correctly, should benefit all of the parties involved.
The sound bites we get from both parties and all of the candidates are not sufficient to make an intelligent comparison between positions on trade. It is clear that Obama isn't telling the truth when he talks about trade. He says he is against NAFTA, and then sends top aids to tell Canada not to worry, it's "pollitical posturing". It's also clear that Hillary has faulty memory here since her and Bill pushed hard for NAFTA and now she's against it and thinks that she always was against it. I'm sure if you look deep enough you can also find where McCain has been less than honest about trade or has changed his position too.

I've been making this point over the last 70 pages of this thread ,and the answer is; there is no end to the greed . Those $30- $50 milion dollar salaries, bonuses, stock options that executives are getting ,could go a long way towards saving the profitability of their companies. But they won't here of it. They would rather their employees take steep pay cuts and work for $8 - $12 dollars an hr.. Even this is not good enough for them, they can get slave labor in China ,where there are no human rights, no EPA to stop them from polluting, and noone to police their criminal activities. Corporate America is trying to turn the american work force, from middleclass to sub-poverty . And everytime I make this point, the right wingers on here , take up for the CEO's rather than the people that actually do the work and build the products. Physical labor does not require a college degree , it is however what keeps this country moving. And they deserve a wage that they can comfortably live on. Partying in college for 4-6 years ,does not entitle you to a golden toilet seat. I would bet that most of the right wingers on this blog, that say factory workers are getting payed too much, are sitting on their butts in an office or cubical behind a computer ,sipping starbucks and surfing the web 2 hrs out of their so-called work day. Try working in a factory ,and you will see who is really working.

Wholeheartedly agree, Dan. We cannot stop, nor should we the global marketplace. Opening these markets can help our prosperity. However, it is the balance of opening these markets and still maintaining our workforce which can springboard our business and our citizens. We just need to make sure we aren't advancing one without the other. How to go about that... I didn't get an economics degree to really have that answer for that HUGE question. NAFTA is not the evil-doer it looks like from the outside, but provisions were left out of the plan to ensure a level playing field. Same thing with GATT. I think we are on the same page.

UK Blue, as far as I am concerned you are making an a$$ of yourself and not really contributing any thing to an otherwise intelligent conversation. You keep making your stereotypically leftist remarks without any thought to the reality of what you are saying. | |
