Since there is no college hockey board here, I thought we should have a hockey thread for those who care.
Gopher hockey has been a little under the radar this year because its been a down year and because of the excitment Tubby brought to the BB team.
But wow, what a game last night. Hard fought by both teams. Kangas was absolutely amazing! Actually he was all weekend. Maybe we can make a little run this year with a hot goaltender, but the best part is that we now have a great goalie for the next three years.
Now that the BB season is over for the most part, time to turn our attention to the hockey team.
Wonderful series with Minnesota State, I hope Pohl is doing ok. All I've read is that he's in "stable condition". He was apparently airlifted to the Mayo Clinic.
It was, but not the same as the previous series. St. Cloud was pretty flat, but scored late to make it too interesting. Gopher were the better team yesterday.
Tough game tonight with a rested fast CC vs. what must be a very tired gopher team. Best chance for gophers is to come out fast, hard, hopefully catch CC a little flat and get a couple goals then hang on for dear life.
This season has been an interesting one since it didn't look like they were going to do anything at all. It's kind of the opposite of the last few years where they were on fire most of the season and then limped into the playoffs. Now they seem to be getting hot at the right time and this has been really fun to watch. Should be an interesting game tonight. A bummer for me is a buddy called me this morning and said he had gotten tickets from his work for the championship game tomorrow night...I can't go though! Oh well, hopefully they play well tonight and I believe they are in the field of 16. Go Gophers!
On a side note, taco and ski I love both of your avatars...you are obviously not the typical fair weather Minnesota fans.
Nice little run there, wish I coulda watched it. Was out of town for the whole thing. At least they punched their ticket to the tourney. On a side note, can't believe Wisconsin (as a 3 seed no less) is going and Minnesota State isn't.
I about crapped my pants when they said the Badgers got in. It says more about how fragile the state that college hockey is in more than anything. They couldnt afford to not put them in when they were hosting a regional even with a losing record.
MN State gets screwed by not getting in, and Denver does because they now they have a first round game vs. WI at WI.
We need more hockey lovers here. The Gophs are in the NCAA tourny and theyre gonna take it. I got a fever...and the only prescription is an NCAA title (again).
Yeah, thank God UND pulled it off in overtime. That seriously wouldn't be right for WI to go to the frozen 4 this year. Some may try to argue that the winner deserves to move on, regardless, but that illustrates the flaw. In a streaky sport like hockey, 1-game series are too insignificant to determine the better and more deserving team. It's too easy to get lucky....it's like in baseball, how some nights even the Yankees will get crushed by the Royals. That's why you gotta play a series.
With the home crowd behind you, even a sub-par team like Wisky could string together a couple wins. I'm actually shocked they didn't win it....I guess that just shows how they really don't belong this year. Who's the badger fan on the selection committee anyways? Losing record teams do not deserve playoffs....end of story.
Well, if the Gophers get knocked out, what better is there then to see the Badgers denied a trip to the Frozen Four they don't deserve and seeing UND get absolutely blasted in the Frozen Four for 5th consecutive time.
