Rumor is the Reds were talking to the Rangers about Gerald Laird...Ross is catching again, so I'm not sure if this is even an issue now.

The Reds still have too many outfielders, and no real shortstop to start the season with, and a couple of catchers that aren't great. Lets hope they hit like the '27 Yankees and those kids in the rotation keep sizzling.

I can't start a threat about it, but I'm a huge Andy Phillips fan (he played at Alabama) and I was wondering if he stood any realistic chance of making the Reds' opening day roster?  Looking over it, it appears it will be hard unless Joey Votto starts out in AAA, and he could be a backup for Hatteberg at 1B, Encarnacion at 3B, or B. Phillips at 2B, as Keppinger is the primary utility infielder.

Again, just wondering what ya'll, as Reds' fans, thought his chances are?

The Reds need leadership from the catcher position in order to really be competitive.  Developing a top notch catching prospect should be one of the organization's top priorities.

Upgrading at the catcher position this year would make the team significantly better.  The Orioles have one the top catching prospects, and parting with Ramon Hernandez might not be that far-fetched a proposition.  He has reasonable defensive skills and seems primed for a bounce back offensive season.

Bengie Molina could fill the bill as well.  Both catchers have atleast a couple more years of service left in the tank.

About Andy Phillips- I also like him. He's a decent hitter and defensive player that can play 3 positions in the infield and also play some OF...

I think that one of two things is going to happen initially:

1. Joey Votto has a history of starting slow at the plate. It would make more sense to see him get regular tune-up at bats in AAA, rather than riding the bench in Cincinnati, if Hatteberg is going to be the starter early. If that is the case, I think Andy Phillips has a real chance of making the early team.

2. If they keep Votto and Hatteberg to start the season, I think it's not going to be long until Votto plays everyday- maybe a month. In that time, if Alex Gonzalez is back in the lineup, I think Jeff Keppinger is the main righty hitting utility guy, including 1b when they need a platoon player there, and Phillips chances are reduced.

The other untangibles that can enter into the decision: How many  pitchers do the Reds keep ? If they keep 12 pitchers, and start with 5 outfielders and 2 catchers, that only leaves 6 infield spots- If Votto and Hatteberg are both here, with Brandon Phillips, EE, and Keppinger there is only 1 spot left ( and only until Gonzalez returns) ....Do the Reds keep Juan Castro ? He's under contract, and they may believe his veteran defense (especially at SS) is needed with Gonzo out, and Encarnacion's suspect glove. What are the plans for Jerry Hairston, Jr. ? He's basically the same kind of player Andy Phillips is, except he plays more outfield, and less 1b.

The other factors unknown are: injuries and slumps....both can change rosters.
