About Andy Phillips- I also like him. He's a decent hitter and defensive player that can play 3 positions in the infield and also play some OF...
I think that one of two things is going to happen initially:
1. Joey Votto has a history of starting slow at the plate. It would make more sense to see him get regular tune-up at bats in AAA, rather than riding the bench in Cincinnati, if Hatteberg is going to be the starter early. If that is the case, I think Andy Phillips has a real chance of making the early team.
2. If they keep Votto and Hatteberg to start the season, I think it's not going to be long until Votto plays everyday- maybe a month. In that time, if Alex Gonzalez is back in the lineup, I think Jeff Keppinger is the main righty hitting utility guy, including 1b when they need a platoon player there, and Phillips chances are reduced.
The other untangibles that can enter into the decision: How many pitchers do the Reds keep ? If they keep 12 pitchers, and start with 5 outfielders and 2 catchers, that only leaves 6 infield spots- If Votto and Hatteberg are both here, with Brandon Phillips, EE, and Keppinger there is only 1 spot left ( and only until Gonzalez returns) ....Do the Reds keep Juan Castro ? He's under contract, and they may believe his veteran defense (especially at SS) is needed with Gonzo out, and Encarnacion's suspect glove. What are the plans for Jerry Hairston, Jr. ? He's basically the same kind of player Andy Phillips is, except he plays more outfield, and less 1b.
The other factors unknown are: injuries and slumps....both can change rosters.
