I hear everyone saying that the Packers need a cornerback, but I think they need another outside linebacker more. They need someone who can run with tight ends because Brady Poppinga could not do that. I agree that they should draft a corner, but why not in the 2nd round? They have plenty off picks. Another thing is I don't get why they need a tight end. The Packers rarely used a 2 tight end set and Donald Lee got a big contract last year. That all might change with Brett gone so who knows, but I think another thing they need is another defensive tackle. I'm not saying draft one with their first pick, but the Packers always seem to rotate their defensive lineman a lot and they could use another guy to plug into that rotation especially with how often Packer DL are usually injured.

I agree that the GB needs an OLB more, but I don't think CB is a big gap between it.  It's actually very close and if I were in GB's position, I would take the best athelete in either one of those positions.  Here's why.  As the guy stated, GB's #1 and #2 CB's are getting older, and they are going to need someone in the very near future to start developing.  If you remember, Harris was already developed by the Eagles and their secondary which is a CB factory.  There isn't going to be that much of an oppurtunity in the next few years in FA to pick up a solid CB again like that, so going to the draft now for the future would be a great idea to ensure that area does not get weak because of age over the next few years.  This draft is chock full of really good college CB's whose skills could translate well into the NFL, and being in GB's position, now would be a great year to draft one in the 1st or 2nd round, depending again on what position has the best athelete availible.

I think with the signing of Brandon Chillar in Free Agency that this lessens the likelihood that TT takes a LB high...mabye later on, though.  Sounds like Chillar is better in coverage than Poppinga and will likely take over the starting spot if he performs in camp as they expect him to.  With $3 million guranteed in the first year, this isn't a token signing and a classic Thompson move of waiting for the craziness of the first 1-2 weeks of FA to pass and then signing a guy at a reasonable price.

I will be interested to see what they do at the 30th pick. Do you take the 5th or 6th best corner or the 1st or 2nd best TE or maybe even the the 2nd or 3rd best Guard?

If GB needs a quick fix at OLB, especially on the weakside.  Takeo Spikes.  Eagles released him solely that did not want to pay him and that there was quality younger (and less expensive starters behind him), but he is still a really good veteran linebacker who'll make a lot of tackles and shore up good pass coverage to that side, as well as stopping the run, especially to the outside.

Dude they signed Chillar because he can do a better job in pass coverage. It should be Poppinga in running situations and Chillar in passing situations. That signing helped the OLB situation so the #1 need is too find a corner who can play at the nickel spot and eventually take the place of a starter.

Don't they generally take that LB out in passing situations and put in a 5th D-back?     I can't really see Poppinga or Chillar splitting time at a position where you're only on the field 1/2 the plays as it is....unless I'm missing something.     To your point, Chillar will be better in coverage on the plays that could be run or pass (1st & 10, 2nd & 7 etc) where the opposition passes the ball.

The people I've talked to who follow the Rams tend to say the same thing:  Chillar reaction is below average and he's proned to mental mistakes.  I'm not sure he's much of an upgrade in the passing game, but if having him around pushes Poppinga to improve his game even more then it's worth it.  CB and OLB are needs... they should take the best player, which will probably be a CB just because there are more of them out there.

I know they signed Brandon Chillar, but is that an upgrade from Brady Poppinga?

The nice thing about this year's draft is that the packers have so few holes and none of them really GLARING holes. They can adjust their strategy depending on who's available. personnally, i know this won't happen but this is what i'd like to see. trade our first round and second round picks for new englands (seventh overall) take Leodis McKelvin. He's a fantastic return man and a great coverage corner. Next, trade the browns second rounder we got for williams, package that with a third or fourth rounder, and trade up to about a 35-40 overall. take Xavier Adibi out of V Tech. He runs the 40 in about 4.4, and will help in coverage. The packers are the youngest team in the league. the don't need a lot of young players. they just need a few quality ones.

CB has to be a greater need, Woodson and Harris are great but to be 34 years old and to be locked up with the #1 receiver every play is a huge task and it'll start to show very soon. If you haven't noticed when Woodson was out there were a lot more big plays coming through the air and the Packers looked helpless. Defensive Tackle is not a place of need right now... I believe we'll have around 8 or 9 D-linemen and most are young. Poppinga isn't the long term answer but he plays with an amazing aggression and it is fun to watch him play, we already brought another OLB to help compete for the spot and should be sufficent for the rest of the year. I would love to see the Packers draft 2 CBs and use there 2nd rounder on a TE.
