Bowa was hard headed, sure. But he was not aggressive, even backing away with his hands up, until the Ump leaned in and created the scene. Umpires are extremely aggressive and do not hesitate to get in a player or coaches face. I feel the ump should be disciplined as well in this case for instigating this unnecessary scene from a mundane situation. He should have ejected him and then turned around and walked away.
He isn't the first ump to be guilty of having "Rabbit Ears."

Todays umpires seem to think the fans come to see them. In the old days they gave players and coaches a little more leeway.

How many warnings does Bowa(memo, Torre and Bowa himself) need to get before he follows the rules.  He forced the ump's hand.

Lost in all the crap being thrown at Bowa is the belligerence of the umpire. His behaviour was guaranteed to infuriate Bowa, a guy known for his hair trigger temper.

Bowa deserved to be suspended for his stupidity but baseball needs to do something about these bloody umps who think fans pay to see them. This meathead ump should have walked away completely from Bowa once he had thrown him out and he should have turned his back and made no further gestures or comments.

If he isn't disciplined and given at least a one-day suspension then Bowa and the Dodgers should appeal and should make a huge fuss about the hypocritical standards being applied.

Must be none of you have ever umpired a game.  Had Bowa done what he was asked and not made a scene about it after the fact then the umpire probably wouldn't hae had to lean in to say something else to him.  Ed would have walked away after tossing him had Bowa not had something else to say about it.

I wouldnt say the ump is completely to blame but lets face it, they're both human and they both have the right to get heated.  when everything thinks they are right no one can be wrong, or is it the other way around? :)

Bob Watson hates Larry Bowa, plain and simple.   They didn't like each other when the Phillies faced the Astros in that epic 1980 NLCS series, and they have been battling ever since.   And kudos to Bowa for bringing up the inequities of MLB.  He's out 3 games for crossing a line, but when Major League Baseball players cross the line for taking steriods and breaking some of Baseball's most sacred records, MLB looks the other way, and suspends NO ONE.  And to not have this coaches box incident come up during spring training, and waiting until the season starts to enforce the rules, is bush league.  I guess umpires don't like tossing guys in spring training, when there's no cameras on them.  They like to wait until the season starts so they can get their mug on ESPN Sportscenter.

I haven't umped any MLB games, but I have umped for years in youth sports. And I have been on the other side as a coach for years as well. The ump should have tossed him, then turned around and walked away. Who cares if Bowa is ranting and raving, then it would be all on Bowa. The ump felt the need to engage in the foolishness after he tossed him, and made the situation worse with his need to get in the last word and was just as much to blame as Bowa.
