Bo did enough to win the award, as shown by the fact that he received more votes than every other coach but one - Keno Davis, who rightfully won it.  As great a job Bo did, Davis did a better one, but not by much.

Davis is a worthy recipient for national COY.  The better question in my mind is should Ryan have won the Big Ten COY?  I think the answer is yes.

This situation is not isolated for UW ahtletes and coaches.  Brian Elliot was in the final 3 for the Hobey Baker award (for best overall college hockey player), yet he finished second in the WCHA for the best goaltender (goalie from St. Cloud won, I can't remember his name).  Joe Thomas won the national award for linemen yet finished second to Jake Long, of Michigan, for the Big Ten award.  Ryan took home one of the national COY awards last year and I don't think he won the Big Ten award.  Interesting.

I don't believe that Bo should have won COY. I do believe that he should have won Big Ten COY.  If the determination was been made after the Big Ten tournament It would have been even more clear that Bo was the COA.

I don't think that this is a lack of respect for Wisconsin.  Matt Painter also did a great job. It's a subjective not an objective vote.

To what do you attribute these instances then?

Keno Davis is the COY. When you take a team that is predicted to finish second to last in a conference that has churned out some very good teams in the Valley, and then goes and blows through the conference tourney, he is the coach.  As for the Big Ten COY, Painter or Bo are fine with me.  Neither was predicted to finish near Michigan St. or IU, and both the Badgers and the Boilers went past them.  You can make the argument that the Badgers won both Big Ten titles making Bo the COY, or you can say that the Badgers for the most part were predicted to finish above Purdue, and Purdue was the only team in about a three month span to beat the Badgers, and became the only team besides Illinois to win at the Kohl Center in a Big Ten game with Bo Ryan coaching.  Both are deserving.
