Whats up with the Mets? They have 5 pitchers with ERA of 9 or higher. The two at the top of the lineup are well below 300 in batting avg. Is this a slow start? Talk to me.

I'm a Mets fan so I hope it is just a slow start, but I have a feeling this team just won't be as good as people thought. They don't have the pitching and they are just too old.

I don't think you can really look at stats this early and project. I mean, one inning pitched and you let up a run is an era of 9. That doesn't mean you're going to really end up with an era of 9. And an average below 300 this early is just a 3 for 4 day away from being a 300 average. Too early to look at batting averages and ERAs after 5 games.

You can't judge a season until it is over, remember Glavine from last year??? good season, but he lost a postseason spot for the Mets as berra said "it aint over till its over"

There really is no reason to look at stats after one week. I always wait til after April to figure out if and/or where there may be problems. Once May is complete, you should have a pretty good idea on how your team is doing.
Don't forget that there is always the last 17 games of the year that can mean a lot. Sorry I'm a Braves fan, I had to take a shot.

April 6th, April 6th, and April 6th. It is only April 6th. If this week happened in the middle of May or June, you would hardly even notice it. Everything is accentuated at the beginning of the year. My Brewers got off to a great start last year, and choked their way out of contention as the season wore on. The Tigers are having problems so far. Don't worry about the Mets after one week. As Jim Brosnan said a long time ago, It's a Long Season.

It's way too early to tell, but coming into the season I really wasn't as impressed with the Mets lineup as the pundits were. I think they have some questionable players that will struggle to play enough games throughout the year for the Mets to win the division and they just don't have the farm system to make up for hobbled players. If they want to win the division, they really can't afford to waste starts like to today by Santana. I think they'll be a very solid team, but I think they'll finish third in the division behind the Braves and Phils (much like the Braves of last season.)
However, never underestimate the power of possible pre-deadline trades. They are definitely a good enough team where if they got a pivotal player through a trade, they'd be in good shape. Unfortunately, they really don't have the prospects to make that kind of a deal.

This is true...but you can't discount history. In the case of the Tigers, no team has ever won the World Series after starting 0-4 and only one has made the World Series. Obviously, with so many games, they could be in first in a week. But just the fact that no one has won the World Series after starting like that says that the odds are way against them.

I agree with dametsrule, but I also agree that the sample size is to small to get any meaningful projections. When 50% of your season could be games against the Giants, like the Brewers. What good is it making predictions based on games played?
As a Mets fan you do have to be worried about the rotation, Either old or unproven.

Yeah, well.... no D1-AA team had ever beaten a ranked D1-A team and all 4 number 1 seeds had never made the Final Four, so history doesn't really mean much this year. I am a Braves fan and one of the biggest Mets haters around, but I'll be the first to say that their "slow start" means absolutely nothing. The Mets are a force. I'm just glad that a few people are actually recognizing that the Braves are just as much a contender as the Mets and Phillies are.
