Andre Barrett was the best pg that ever wore pirate blue, especially considering the noob of a coach he had to deal with for 3 years, but thats besides the point. Harvey is probably upset at Seton Hall for 2 main reasons.
One, the fanbase has caught on to his lack of ballhandling, shooting. For whatever reason he was beloved his freshman year, for what he did in non conference for a team lacking solid scorers. Once the big east schedule hit, it was clear that hes an undersized, poor shooting 2guard.
And the main reason for his discontent has got to be the buzz around Theodre coming in. Hed be foolish to not realize his minutes are in serious jeopardy, and if he doesnt perform, he will sit..
Theres already an unfair outcry over Gonzalezs tenure so far, and he faces a lot of pressure going into this season to produce a winner. If Harvey continues his lazy, lackluster play, there is no way Gonzalez will put up with it. There were already times late in the season where Harvey would be benched for 5 or 10mins and move Nutter to the point. Now that we have Theodre coming in, who is a natural pg, there is a strong possibility that by midseason, Harvey could be coming off the bench.
I know this is an old thread, but I haven't been on in awhile. I wouldn't be surprised that he's unhappy, since his minutes already started to decline last year, and he was taken out in pressure situations constantly.
You're right about the fan base catching on also--he's a very hollow player with streaky shooting and average ball-handling skills and I think everyone in the arena knows that. Of course he's also got time to improve on those, but it doesn't seem like he's interested. In that sense, it's really too bad.
I loved Shaheen, but I'd have to give it to Barrett overall as being the best Hall PG ever...and Buddha I'm from the same era for the most part--graduated in '92 (not from the Hall, but my father was a graduate so we grew up watching the games). Still though, as a pure PG there wasn't really anyone on those teams that compared to Shaheen or Barrett in pure talent and game-changing impact. I think you'd probably agree on that point...
If Harvey was unhappy 2 months ago, I wonder how hes feeling now that we have a 6-3 combo guard that shoots the lights out and can handle the rock. Not to mention Theodre has looked rather impressive in the allstar games hes played, and Gause will be 100% by midnight madness. Hes such a defensive liability that I wouldnt be surprised to see him coming off the bench by the start of Big East play.
The one thing he does has going for him now though is Oliver. Videos of the kid show he has very capable hands and although I think Harveys jumper is complete trash and his decision making is rather suspect at best, he has the undeniable ability to get into the paint. I think a lot of his early success was teams were unaware of his poor outside shooting and thus respected his jumper. This allowed him to get by his man before help could step over. This year, teams left him wide open, and when he drove the lane, they collapsed leaving Garcia, or the reserve bigs open. None of the 3 has a mid range game and harvey frequently found himself in no mans land.
Oliver should provide that inside pressance that hopefully opens the lane for either easy layups or good looks for Mitchell, Hazzell, Jackson. If harvey is hitting the gym hard this summer working on his jumper he will have the opportunity to live up to his hype, otherwise he'll have a seat reserved right next to walters. Either way, we should be better at every position this year.
Laing was a great offensive threat, however he was rather undersized at the 4, and although I may be in the minority saying his defense was suspect at best, Portsmouth proved that when he was listed as most dissapointing player there. We have 6-11 325 at center. For the first time since Dalembert we have a legit big east center. Garcia can move to the 4 against the better big east teams to provide a rather formidable frontcourt. And that leaves Gause, Stix, and either Jackson/Theodre/Hazzell or 2 of the 3 when we play run and gun. We have a deep bench and the fortune of having viable options at every position.
As I said 2 months ago when everyone was getting on Gonzalez for the "lack of recruiting" we gained a scholarship by davis leaving, to go along with davis leaving!!!!! we got potentially the biggest recruit the hall has seen since Barrett in Oliver, and we got a kid that can shoot lights out from anywhere on the court in Jackson. We have Stix to assume the SF, and a healthy gause and garcia. At this point, who isnt excited for the start of the season. I know I am
