Great news that they re-signed him. I believe when Bethea's contract is up they'll let him walk for the big money and Girodano will quietly step in at the starting role. The dude is lightning fast and he plays a lot like Bpb Sanders. I love Bethea, but I am excited for when Giordano gets his chance. He's fun to watch.
(and he can play special teams!)

i personally doubt they will let bethea walk. having two stud safeties is too much of a weapon for our defense. plus, lets not forget that sanders gets hurt a lot because he is such a physical powerhouse. having giordano in a backup role is crucial because odds are that he will still end up starting a few games a season due to injuries.

Matt Giordano is an exciting player who fits the Colts defense and special teams perfectly. He could start. But, I think that perhaps the development of Dante Hughes and Michael Coe will dictate what the Colts do with Antoine Bethea. Remember, Marlin Jackson can play safety as well as CB. So, if Hughes, Coe or Tim Jennings (unlikely) make the next step and can start at CB (at least in the interim), Jackson could start at CB and slide over to either safety spot if necessary.

I hate to say this Cir, but Whack is right. This will probably be Bethea's last year as a Colt. He's not going to stay here and play for under a million a year when he can go to another team and easily be making 3-4 mil per year. This is his contract year so he's going to give his 110% to this Colts team, but it will be his last. The Colts DO NOT have the money he will want to stay with this team. Marvin would either have to retire or the NFL would have to be un-capped for us to be able to afford him. I can see Giordano taking over as starter at FS the following season unless they draft some bada$$ from college.

This is also Kelvin Hayden's contract year so hopefully Coe or Hughes really adapt and come on this year. I would hate to drop back Marlin into the FS as he isn't as fast as Matt, but if we were put into a bad situation at least we have the guys who can play most of the secondary positions without skipping a beat.

Yeah, Bethea will be a restricted FA next year. I'd like to see us tender him at the 2nd rounder level and see if anyone bites. That would make him a pretty successful little development project. Draft him with a sixth rounder, get three years of excellent play (and hopefully two Pro Bowls) out of him, never pay him more than $500 thousand/year, and end up getting compensated a 2nd rounder for him once he leaves. Then, if Giordano just got a three- or four-year contract, we'd still be pretty set at safety. Sounds like a typically wise Polian move.

If Bethea does walk which is likely conisdering the Colts are strapped for cash, you have to be excited about Giordanno's potential. I was happy when they signed him, however, I wasn't happy when it was a one year contract but maybe they are just setting it up to sign him to a long term one when Giordanno leaves.
Some one mentioned how Hughes and Coe will develop as being key to what will happen. In addition, the development of Brannon Condren I think is key too. I think he has potential and he is talked about as an intense player who can hit and help with the run so he was drafted to fit well in the Colts scheme. Sounds like somebody who can fill in as a backup if Bob Sanders gets hurt when and if Bethea actually leaves the Colts.

Giordano was a Restricted Free Agent this year. He signed the $927,000 offer sheet the Colts tendered to him, which is a 1 year contract. He becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent next season.
If the Colts offer Bethea a 3rd level tender, which is 2nd round compensation, this will be his last season. Several teams would pay him AND give up a 2nd for him. The only way they guarantee to keep him is a 1st level tender, which is a 1st and a 3rd. A 2nd level tender, which is a 1st, would more than likely keep him, but since he's a proven commodity, you never know. He wouldn't be the crap shoot a draft pick would be.

you all make good points. i love bethea. he is one of my favorite colt players. that said, if we can get a 1st or 2nd round pick for him after the year in compensation and still manage to hold on to giordano, i would say we could let him go. it would be a sad day for me, but now that i think about it, it looks like it will happen.

For the money it is a great move. He is a solid player as both a back-up and as a special teams contributer, however, I don't think he is legiate enough to really be a long-term starter let alone an impact player. I hope he keeps improving and becomes a great star, however, if a solid safety falls into the Colts' lap, I hope they don't hesitate to take the best player avialable (and I am fully aware that safety is not the priority for this years draft as far as neeeds are concerned; but the Colts' and Polian insist that they will take the best player avialable and I hope that holds true)

With the Colts resigning Giordano they should still keep Betha. Giordano is a good player but he has some room to improve on. If Betha walks then Giordano will step in and do good for him. I think he stills need two years to become good like Betha.

I'm not as sold on Giordano as most of you appear to be. He is fantastic to have on special teams, but thats as far as I'm willing to go.

I like Giordano, especially for the way he hits. But if I had to choose between him and Bethea, it would be no contest. A strong argument could have been made for him being a Defensive ROY. The offer the Colts tender to him after this season will be very telling about whether they want to keep him and possibly franchise him when he becomes unrestricted. They franchised Edge to get one more year out of him before he left. They franchised Freeney and Clark because they didn't want to let them get away. Since they had to use the tag on Clark, they made sure they had Sanders wrapped up before the end of the season. I'm thinking they're going to do what it takes to keep Bethea, which means a high tender. He and Bob go together like peanut butter and jelly.
