Per multiple media reports, running back Shaun Alexander will be released in the near future by the Seattle Seahawks.

The move isn’t surprising, given the huge contract that Alexander received in 2006 and the low production that the team has gotten from him since then. We consistently heard during Alexander’s record-setting 2005 campaign that the team was leery about paying him big money due to fears that, once he got paid, the fire would go out.

The timing is a little peculiar, however. Our best guess is that the Seahawks are hoping that Alexander’s arrival on the market in the days before the draft might cause some teams to be distracted from their draft preparations, as they ponder whether to pursue Alexander — and as they potentially expedite the process if multiple teams join the hunt.

Finally, we continue to see references to the notion that the Seahawks were not able to cut Alexander until his injured wrist heals. That is simply incorrect. As to an injury suffered in 2007, he can be cut while not healthy, and the team would be responsible for at most $275,000 in 2008. If Alexander signs elsewhere, the Seahawks owe him nothing.

And that’s another reason to cut Alexander now. If he is seriously injured during offseason workouts or minicamps, the team would potentially be on the hook for all or part of his 2008 base salary.

I just saw that on SI's website.  I don't know about you but I don't feel comfortable with Julius Jones and TJ Duckett carrying the rock.  I guess they still have Morris too though.  I think we should watch for Seattle to make a move to get one of the top 3 backs.

Wonder who will be interested in the 2006 MVP??? Interesting..... I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in Tampa Bay or Carolina.  Maybe even the Jets.

Thoughts?

That kind of thing shows the ugly side of the NFL, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME TODAY. I think that's what will happen to Duece McAllister next year or the year after. He signed that big deal a couple of years ago.

That was my thought too.  They have some okay RB's but nothing to hang your hat on & we've seen Julius Jones continue to be fair at best.

I'm not sure how many '09 picks the Hawks have but they only have 6 this year as they don't have a 5th round pick so trading up could leave them with slim pickins.

Keep in mind though, it's Mike Holmgren's last year so they could make some wicked moves to get him his last ring.

By the way, 5:44 central time and it's official, Alexander is a free agent.

I beleive the Seahawks are doing the right thing here.Maybe a change of scenery will do both sides some good.

Deuce isn't going anywhere he restructered his contract for lower amounts so he's not a as huge a burden on our salary cap anymore.

As for Alexander, personally I never thought that he was all that good to begin with and now he just got cut.  Way to not show up after you get a huge contract (I'm looking at you Charles Grant.)

the thing is though that Shaun hasnt produced anywhere near the level he did in the contract year since he resigned ,while Deuce still plays the same everytime he goes out on the field.

We are seeing more and more of this these days in the NFL, with teams signing players to huge long term contracts that are back-loaded. Shaun Alexander, i don't think has ever fully recovered from the injury he suffered two years ago, last year when we played them, he just seemed slow and indesisive on his cuts. I also think Seattle's offensive line is nowhere as good as it was when they had Steve Hutchinson. Everybody remember Adrian Peterson last year?
