The Steelers have made it clear that they drafted QB Dennis Dixon as a quarterback and have no plans to move him to another position.
The plan is to have Dixon eventually back up Ben Roethlisberger and get on the field in select situations. Dixon says he is ahead of schedule in the rehabilitation of his ACL injury.

For what it is worth, Dennis Dixon is different than Antwan Randle-El, Hines Ward, and for the most part, Kordell Stewart. Dixon was brought to the Steelers because he is a really good QB. Not to be a be a slash type of player.
Dixon is a project. One, he is still recovering for a serious knee injury that not only cost him the Heisman, but a chance to lead the Oregon Ducks to a National Title. This kid is a really talented player who could provide the Steelers with the insurance they most certainly need moving ahead. Lets face it, regardless of how good or bad the line is, Ben Roethlisberger is not exactly proven to be durable. It seems like he always is hurt or nursing something along the way. As much as love Charlie Batch, his time is coming to an end and with Ben not exactly being an ironman, we better have somebody to step in. Dennis Dixon is that guy.
This is a perfect scenario for Dixon. He gets to take his time healing and will have the opportunity to work with Charlie Batch. Batch has proven to be a valuable mentor and I think this will be the case with Dixon. He has all the tools, strong arm, great competitor, a leader, and a nice set of wheels to compliment his throwing ability. This was a very smart pick and one that has a ton of value. Dixon could have easily been a first day pick before all of his bad luck. We were lucky to get him.

I agree this is a great pick, Dixon needs about a year to learn the playbook and after that he can replace Batch (I like Charlie also). As far as value this is a high value pick. I can't wait for camp to start.

I agree here vscalesptt; I think he is coming in to a great situation. He wil be groomed to be the backup QB. He has to refine a few techniques and really learn the system. He will do fine here.

Hey,
Dixion as a QB sounds great. Who know, after a year, maybe, Dixion will have have a chance to show that something, and the Steelers turn a 2nd day pick into a 1st day pick. Say, someone like the Panthers.....
I just don't see him being a back-up. He's to talented. Physically he has all the tools, but can he process the NFL game?

Along with Dixon's talent, he is smart. He ended school at 3.29 gpa. He became the assistant QB coach after his knee injury. He relayed the plays in from the side line, remember Oregon has a no huddle offense. He has worked hard since his knee surgery, check out www.dennisdixon10.com.

Before you bash Kordell for his erratic play, remember that we switched OC's in the middle of his tenure as a starter. He didn't start playing badly until the new OC came in. Remember Chan Gailey?? Kordell was a QB that needed an offense built around his strengths, and trying to put him into a different offense was his downfall.

A lot of people fail to realize that Kordell Stewart was not that bad. He was utilized incorrectly. People tend to forget that Stewart had 5 different OCs. The Steelers didn't truly have confidence in him. He was far more than a QB; he was multi-talented. He did EVERYTHING. hE
