I can understand estimating one way or the other, but to say our draft was terrible, or a joke at this point is pretty bold. I'm not sure how things are going to turn out, but if our new players turn out I hope you fellas are ready to eat some words...

Along with all the rest of the rational world, I've got to question Avery at #33.
If you are the Rams you could pick him up in the third or the fourth round, most likely. The highest I saw him on anyone's depth chart was 6th. Most sources had him from the 10th to 16th best WR in the draft.
When you look at the incredible list of talent available at #33, it's just sickening.
But then, that's what you get for bringing in Beavis to run your draft.
Who else but the Rams would make their director of player personnel the guy who drafted Ryan Leaf #2 for San Diego?
Even if Avery turns out to be a good player, they over paid for him.
He wasn't the best WR prospect. You could have picked up Brandon Flower, Chilo Rachal, Fred Davis, Dan Connor, Shawn Crable, Don Zibokowski, pretty much your pick of talented CBs, ANY other WR, and STILL gotten Avery, probably in the 4th.
Other than that, it's a solid if not spectactular draft. Long is a keeper, and perhaps Dorsey will be better over the long term, Long is a solid character guy who will be a very good DE for a decade.
But it's mostly about missed opportunities, and the Rams show why they can't make that leap back to contention once again.

I didn't think it was a bad draft. In fact I thought it was a pretty good draft. However I did think that they squandered their positional advantage with that second pick. You have to admit that Donnie Avery was a pretty big reach.
You're talking about a different sort of evaluation. At the time of the draft every pick is a gamble. You're dealing with probabilities of future success of the prospect you're looking at coupled with the probability that he will be on the board at this or that point in the draft. If your future evaluation says that Jake Long is a bust for Miami for whatever reason it doesn't follow that Jack Long was a bad pick. It just means that the Dolphins lost on one of their short odds gambles.
I just think the odds that Donnie Avery would be available to St. Louis later on were a lot better than the odds of his future success vs. somebody like say, Quinton Groves. So I think it's a poor pick even if he turns out in the end to be a great player. If you want him so badly that you can't risk waiting then trade down and get more picks to compensate for what you're giving up by reaching.

Yeah, some of the draft graders out there are saying that this selection was a result of Linehan's love for wide receiver speed. If that's the case (I really wouldn't know myself) then I think you'd need to classify it as an emotional pick. Not very wise if you ask me.

I would go higher then a B. I would say A- or even an A. Chris Long is the best player in the draft as well as filling our biggest need. Greco is a STEAL, he'll be awesome. Also, we picked up a couple of increadibly fast and underrated WR's. I'm very happy with the draft, just like I was with the lakers over the past few years, and look what happened.

The Rams should have a better season than expected..injuries killed them last year.
I LONG(pun..get it) for the days of the fearsome Foursome though..their defense is soft and I am being kind.
Long was a great pick..this gives them a solid D-line end to end
Greco was another solid pick and I like King at CB
Avery and Burton will hopefully add some speed back at WR
Schuening might be ok on the O-line
Overall, not bad..but they really need to "mean" up that defense.
I think they could surprise a lot of people this year and compete for the NFC West

This thread ran the gambit. Good to see alot of intelligent ram fans on this site. Personally, I feel like we addressed some major needs.
The Rams got their top ranked WR on the board. Avery was first WR taken. That pick will determine if it is a C draft or an A draft.
Is Avery gonna be Steve Smith (A) or is Avery gonna be Kevin Curtis (b-) or is Avery gonna be Dante Hall (C).
There were not any other major complaints with the OL we took. My makor hope is the corner from Penn State will be a player. It was disappointing to look at his numbers against quality WR last year
Go Rams

I agree blueslover58, this draft was about filling needs.. And that was obvious from the first round...
Do I agree with the Avery pick, no... But someone saw something in him that made him a Ram... I hope its his Az Hakim like speed, and further hope better hands than Hakim had come with that package...
But we needed D-Line, O-Line, WR and LB help going into this draft and we got it... And Greco was a serious steal, he will help our O-Line day 1...
I do see the LB Chamberlain being our SS rather than an actual OLB... The other we'll see... But he is depth, and we needed that...
And notice that all of those picks in this draft are good character guys... None of them have legal baggage... Thats refreshing...

1st round Chris Long Virginia - can’t really hate that. Great guy, great genes, solid player. I wanted Dorsey, but oh well.
2nd round Donnie Avery, WR Houston - 2007 C-USA 1st team All-American (all-purpose back) ; 5’11, 186lbs ; 4.2 – 40 ; 4th in the nation in average of 112 receiving ypg ; 1,880 all-purpose yards in 2007 ; this guy sounds like the next Dante Hall but taller and stronger, but can he play in the NFL?
3rd round Joe Greco, OT Toledo - He filled in at LT when Nick Kaczur (Patriots) was hurt as a sophomore. 2007 3rd team All-american ; 3 time 1st team All conference (Mid-American) ; 6’5, 325lbs ; stud
4th round Justin King, CB/WR Penn St. - 1st team All Big 10. Rated the nations’ top CB out of high school, he went to Penn St - his freshman year he played offense and defense, switching to CB in 2006 ; lack of strength could be an issue and can he tackle? ; 4.38 – 40 ; 40” vertical ; 5’11, 192lbs ; Mizzou fans: we took this guy and then the Chiefs took Will Franklin shortly after - 4.3 - 40 ; 6\’1, 215lbs.
5th round Keenan Burton, WR Kentucy - Hurt alot of his college career, but when he played he was very good. Burton had a banner junior season – 1st team All SEC ; 6’2, 195lbs ; 4.47 – 40 ; 43.5” vertical ; 4th in Kentucky history with 182 receptions. I like this guy.
5th round Roy Schuening, OG Oregon St. Started 50 consecutive games for the Beavers. 1st team all-american & 1st team All PAC 10. 6’4, 320lbs. Stud
7th round Chris Chamberain, OLB Tulsa – Coaching staff at Tulsa said he was the team’s best athlete. Will probably be converted to a Safety (but does he have the speed); All-american honorable mention ; 1st team All C-USA ; 6’2, 226lbs ; 4.67 – 40
7th round Mr. Irrelevant ; David Vobora, OLB Idaho – Has been among the nation’s elite the last 2 years. Has been 7th and 3rd the last 2 years in tackles. 2007 All-american honorable mention & 1st team All-WAC ; 4.59 – 40 ; 6’1, 236lbs.
Chris Long is solid. Our 2 O-line picks are solid. Our 2 WR's seem to have a good upside. I like this years' class. But we will find out soon enough.

I give it a B. We should of drafted Dan Connor in the 2nd round and tried to get Avery in the 3rd... But i cant really argue cause i think John Greco will be a solid offensive linemen and he could develope into a great player one day.
Not too bad for the Rams. A lot of you guys think it's going to be another bad year... but i think we should be around 8-8. We still have alot of holes to fill.

Avery and Burton are wonderful WRs, but taking both with such thin LB and safety crews is reckless.
I've always admired coaches in any sport that maximize given ingredients. That over-achieve with patched-together squads.
Linehan just piles on more offensive weapons, rarely out-coaching anyone.
I'm sick of hoping for pleasant surprises and best case scenarios: Culbertson exceeds expectations, Pisa plays more than two games, no other LB injuries, Little regains dominance.
"Addressing" LB and SS with the two seventh rounders is just insulting.
And if it comes out that the Rams wanted much more than an extra second rounder to move down a few spots, I'll lose a lot of sleep. It doesn't matter how good C. Long, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan, Ernie Banks, or Randy Moss are if they play on teams filled with holes.

Jesse - I understand what type of assessment this is, thats why I think "worst draft ever" type of comments are a little premature. I am all about trying to rate these guys from this day, just saying we might want to keep a more open mind to potential.
As far as our reach for Avery... Of course it was a reach. Yes, may have got him in the third. But (might be remembering this wrong) I believe ten recievers flew off the board in round 2. That leaves a good amount of reasonable doubt that Avery could have been gone by the third. Also, the Rams weren't looking for the best receiver available. They were looking for the best SLOT reciever available. I'm not saying it was a great move, just that there is a little more reasoning behind it than that Linehan loves speed. Personally, I think he'll be a great fit for us. 800+ yard rookie year, even. Can't say he would have been my pick at #33....
