Thanks, Obsidian. I was trying to find that Norv Turner quote; when I heard that, it made the pick even better.
I thought it was sort of silly when Kubiak said he was reluctant to trade down at first because he didn't want to miss out on Brown, but now I see what he was talking about.
I'm excited to see how quickly our coaches can get this guy on the field. I'm not sure how it works with linemen; do you want to get their growing pains out of the way early, or will they develop bad habits if they get thrust into a game? Furthermore, despite his lack of technique right now, is he a better option for the ZBS right now than Salaam because of sheer athleticism?

Getting some extra picks was a good move.
As for the players selected, the problem with "Grading the Draft" is that the people who grade drafts kind of assume that everyone is working for the same goals. They can see something as simple as a team needing a quarterback, but they don't know the teams well enough to be able to analyze strategies and how a team's draft choices fit into a strategy.
Example: Yes, our quarterbacks need some more protection. No doubt. But part of avoiding sacks is setting up a credible running game that keeps a defense back on its heels. So you don't necessarily need a brute who want keep defensive linemen out of your backfield -- maybe what you need is a clever run blocker who can create lanes, so that, yeah, the defensive lineman is in the backfield, but, hey, that's not where the ball is anymore.
The geniuses want the biggest, baddest lineman ... but when you are drafting for an Alex Gibbs system, that's not who you want. And, as others have pointed out here, in that system, you don't need a genius one-man-team runningback. You need a smart runner who can find the holes.
The national-level graders don't take that into consideration. In their world, every team has the same needs. And that ain't how the game works.

Howdy guys!!
Love ya Blue is dead to me.
I too was a die-hard Oilers fan and will never forgive "Butt" Adams for picking them up and moving them out. His whole attitude and the way he handled trying to get a new stadium were retarded. All you have to do is look at how Bob McNair pulled it off, and what a stadium we got!! As far as Love ya blue goes, I could never say it is dead to me, those are some sweet memories to me. They will always stick with me, at least until my Texans hit the playoffs and start making some noise!!
Which I predict will be this year!!
GO Texans!!!

Whats up guys? New to this board but here to stay.
Another great draft by Smith. Great move trading back but stopping just ahead of the Chargers. Even better was the Cowboys trading up one spot ahead of the Texans thinking they were stealing Mike Jenkins from us. The Texans at no point were interested in Jenkins who made it clear he likes to cover and not come up strong and stop the run. Way to go Jerry Jones! You really got over on us!
Im excited to see Slaton and Im really hoping Molden turns out to be another Bennett. Adibi could turn out to be the steal of our draft.

No prob Nashmeister.
I thought I also read somewhere - I really need to start taking notes - in an article about the 49ers that they were also primed to take an O-lineman in the 1st round - that would have been about at #29. Since there were none left they took Kentwan Balmer. Also considered "a reach" by some talking heads.
I swear, how do these talking heads have any idea what the coaches are trying to achieve and what type of player they need to meet those goals.
Our biggest problem last year wasn't personnel. It wasn't even injuries - although that was #2.
It was TURNOVERS.
We gave the ball away 38 times. Only Baltimore was worse. That's over twice a game. Very defenses are bad-a$$ enough survive that. Few offenses can make up the points the other guys get from 2 T/Os a game. Its amazing we finished 8-8.
If we clean turnovers up and don't lose half our team to the M.A.S.H. unit. We have an excellent chance at 10+ wins and a playoff berth. And that's with last years boys.

That's true. And a lot of that rests on Schaub's shoulders. He had an overwhelmingly large amount of sack-fumbles. Considering he didn't get sacked all that often, he definitely needs to work on securing the ball in the backfield. But some of that is also a result of whiffs by Salaam; when you get blind-sided there's not much you can do.
Still, you expect turnovers from young teams. Especially with first-year starting QBs. And especially when a nonexistent running game forces you to throw the ball 35 times per game. Also, I'm guessing Owen Daniels won't fumble nearly as much next year. Those are sort of freak-turnovers that we shouldn't come to expect. And for the record, I still think it was BS to call a fumble on the play where OD suffered a broken nose. He had the ball pinned between his elbow and thigh; why does that not constitute possession? But that's in the past, and I need to get over it already.

I was drooling over Mendenhall too, but I think the Texans showed good discipline by adressing a bigger need with a lineman. Ahman Green can still be a great contributor, I think Chris Brown was an excellent pickup, and Chris Taylor may turn out to be a good NFL RB. Top that off with a 3rd down back, and RB is not a weakness, but without good blocking, even LT would struggle.
Luv Ya Blue til the day I die, but now it's blue and Battle Red!
