Buddy Nix retired according to Chargers sources. According to Buddy's wife, he returned home to Tennessee after resigning. Should be pretty interesting to see if this is another A.J. Smith power play. I thought Buddy Nix brought in some great insight to help build the Chargers over the last few years. What do you believe?

Charged4Life,
Great topic for a thread. Why didn't I didn't think of it???

Buddy is nearly 70 (I think) so retirement seems very feasible. Then again given the abruptness and lack of concrete details on the departure make me awfully suspicious that this was another AJ power play.

The article on Chargers.com says Buddy and AJ had worked together 15 years going back to their days together on the Bills staff. To me that would indicate a long standing relationship that from all appearances seemed ok. If there had been a philosophy difference it would have come up sometime in the 15 prior years. At 68 I think he worked this final draft for AJ and retired.

Exactly. What retirement isn't going to be "sudden". I mean what did you want the guy to do, drag it out Brett Favre style for the next 3 years?

Boltnut & StanDiego55,

I agree both of you guys. A.J Smith is not the ideal person whom you'd prefer to work with.  He's very talented but hardcore kinda guy.  Buddy had been working with him for 15 years, yes 15 years together so we can throw out "difference vision/philosophy" theory.

I tend to agree Buddy is more like burned out at age 68 with busy schedule, travel and all the stress go along with it.

According to the article, he went home along with NFL agent.  I'm hoping Buddy wants to stick to retirement. I don't want him end up with another AFCW team shortly after his time in SD.

Cheers,

I think he was released into retirement. He is a older man at 70, I'm sure that the Chargers told him that they are looking into hiring a newer, younger Assistant GM for the future.

I don't think Nix wanted to go, but I think he realized it was time.

Just because his plans were kept a secret from the fans doesn't mean this was a sudden move. He very likely had been planning on retiring for some time now, and waited until after the draft to announce it. He has worked with AJ for 15 years, and it is very unlikely that he was forced out or released. AJ is not exactly a young man himself, and it makes no sense to force out a well respected and trusted employee because of age when you are relatively in the same age group.

I think he retired on his own. He seemed to have a good relationship with A.J. They worked together forever and he was the last link to the Bills and the late John Butler. That being said I think Buddy could have stayed in San Diego for as long as he wanted.  What do you guys think of the Randy Mueller hiring? I'm not sure what to think about him.

Also what about the rumor the the Bolts have agreed to terms with Jeremy Newberry? Anyone heard anything about that? If it's true that means Hardwick is hurt worse than first feared.

I don't know too much abuot Mueller, but from what I have read, he has been a GM for two different teams. He will be doing scouting for us, so I'd have to believe he's well qualified. I also don't think AJ would hire somebody he didn't believe in to his staff.
