Dodd, your little Michigan-Ohio St. scenario doesn't make sense.  How in the hell would these teams be "locked in" to a 4 team playoff already?  Most years, teams in the top 4 have no more than 1 loss heading into the bowls.  Losing later in the season is worse than losing early.  The loser of this game would be out of the top 4 about 90 percent of the time unless you had a crazy situation where all other teams had at least 2 losses.  No team would ever say, well, we're gonna take it on faith that we are locked into the top 4 so we can just tank it in this game and hope the voters keep us up there.  Perhaps this might hold water in a larger playoff, but 4 teams, no.  The best thing about plus one is that there is less of a chance that an undefeated champion of a BCS conference will be left without a shot at the title.

If they go to this or any other playoff format no team would a lock, maybe a conference champ, but isn't that what the BCS provides for?

I dont see a lock under a playoff. The way we have things now, I see certian teams in some of the weaker conferances being a lock for the top 4, then they sit back and wait for those 4 to loose so they can slide up to the top 2 spots. Its a joke, really.
