The position of the US Supreme Court regarding the separation of church and state has changed over time.  There used to be "high wall separation" between the two earlier in the 20th century, where it was considered unconstitutional for the two to mingle.  Now, that's relaxed quite a bit, to the point where religion is allowed in things like the Pledge of Allegiance, as long as no particular religion is being singled.  The mention of God on currency or in song is not specific to any particular religion, so it's ok.

As for me?  I don't really care either way.  Atheists or Agnostics who get severely offended at the mention of God I think overreact a bit.  It doesn't really cause them any physical or mental anguish to have God mentioned, nor do I think there's any prejudice against those who don't believe in God in today's society.

If people want to get concerned and up in arms over the actions of our government, there are plenty of other more pressing issues to address first (and no shortage of them).  There are bigger fish to fry than whether or not the mention of God causes an undue burden on Atheists.

I agree with you about the bible,  first it was a story told orally, then it was written on paper by many different people,  Translated and interpreted hundreds of diffferent ways.

So true.  there's is a possibility that the word GOD has some adverse effect on some, much like the voice of Mary hart from entertaiment tonight, her voice caused some people to have convulsions.  I think you needed to be epileptic though, to get the full effect.

I pledge my life, property and soul to the government who may take from me what they wish when they wish including my life and tell me what to do no matter how stupid it is.

This whole thread misses the big picture.  There should be no pledge in a truely free country.   99% can't even imagine a world free of rulers who control your lifes which is why religion is used to help rulers get you to act like sheep.  The brainwashed argue over details ad infinitum yet never question the corrupt system itself.  The democratic-socialist-corporate-stat
e rules your sorry asses and you think you're free!  Grow up and free your minds.

Protestant Churches (the one's I know) have no connection with the Catholic church, they are not anything like the Catholic church. -----

I attend a Lutheran church and it is pretty close to a Catholic church except we don't do hail mary's, nor do we do confession...oh...and we don't have that whole priest/boy issue to deal with.   It seems like everyone that is a disenfranchised christian grew up Catholic?   I wonder if Catholicism or Christianity drove them to Agnostic or Atheism?

Keep it in.

As soon as you show me one person who has suffered debilitating emotional or physical harm due to saying the words "Under God" I'll say get rid of it.  Until then, stop whining and keep it there.

If you don't like the U.S. as is then don't let the door hit your a$$ on the way out.

---------------------------------

"We'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American Way"

How about this concept instead...if you LOVE the U.S., try to change it for the better.  Why do we have to accept the U.S. as is, when it has many flaws?  Our Founding Fathers said that not only was it the people right, it was their responsibility to rise up against the government if it started to become too powerful.  It's why they included the whole theory of checks and balances.

Not every criticism against our country should be met with "if you don't like it, get the hell out."  That would be like saying if Catholics don't like child molesting preists, they should just get our of the religion.  No, Catholics should stay true to their religion, and try to change the negative aspects of it.

Don't be a yahoo.
