cbyfndaboot,

I have a simple question for you.

Is America a secular nation?

Also I think that it is interesting that the "Under God" part was also added during the era of McCarthyism (if you are unaware of what that is then watch Good Night and Good Luck).  A time in American History that everyone was so worried about the "red scare" and proving that they were so patriotic they would do anything to keep from being black balled by society.  Joseph McCarthy's ideas of cleansing America of the communist threats were like a modern day Salem witch hunt, and happened 10 years after Hitlers ideas of ethnic cleansing.

I voted undecided on this poll but because of this maybe it should be removed just on this fact alone.

Stating unequivically that "most of the founding fathers were Deists" is a falsehood.

Notably Franklin, Jefferson, Paine and Ethan Allen were, but that is a vast minority of the signatures on the Declaration.  Jefferson was VERY vocal about his opposition to organized religion.  When you consider the situation many of the Founders came from you can understand why.  The Church of England of that day was one of the reasons that many of them left England.  There was oppression from a government enforced single religion.  Therefor many of the orginial settlers left England in order to have freedom to express their own beliefs.  Many of this individuals were Christians of some form or another.  Most were not Catholic as that was the primary emphasis in the Church of England at the time.

Really though, this nation was founded on Christian principles based on the original make-up of leaders.

To get back to the topic of the Under God principle...  This is namely important to imply accountability.  That even the President of the nation has someone larger than himself to answer to in keeping this nation on course with the founding fathers intent.  The Pledge is recited at the beginning of Congress to remind the leaders of this nation of that assertion that the elected leaders have someone to answer to, the people of the nation and God.

And now you have my opinion...  now I need to get back to sports and away from religion, but first,  food for thought: Separation of Church and State is made law by what ammendment?  (Answer, not mentioned in any at all, only mentioned by Jefferson in a letter referencing 1st Ammendment, but the 1st does not mention that separation anywhere.)

Damn SL...

Anyway well over half the Founding Fathers were Episcopalian, Anglican, and Presbyterian.   They did not want to be like England where the pressure of one church was great.   They were leaving persecution for their "other" christian beliefs.
