What's everybodys take on Tatum Bell? Does anyone feel like I do about him? I said he was a mistake when we traded for him and so that has proved right. Tatum Bell was OK with Shanahan running the show but since has completely stunk including his poor, unproductive, and lackluster stint with the Lions. When he had the opportunity to show his talents, nothing surfaced. The Lions however see something with him and I hope they are right. But until he shows me something in a game, I am not a fan of his usfulness.

I am a big fan of carrying a veteran tailback who has actually ran for over a hundred yards in an actual NFL game , on the roster. Yes, he is a better option than calhoun, cason, or pinner. I see the logic .
He only registered double digit carries in 2 games last yr, thats nowhere near enough touches. In oakland , I felt he was his best game in a lion uni. 15 carries for 87 yrds and a TD. He can also be a nifty receiver - 4 catches 25 yards at minnesota.
Like him or not he is our opening day starter the second yr in a row. But like everyone else I hope to see the new #34 pushing him for PT. Tatum Bell will contribute in a positive way to Lion victories in 08.

NO!! People keep saying that Bell was unproductive with us... what games were you watching?? The one's where he sat on the bench because Martz hated him, or the ones where he averaged 4yds a carry when given the ball, He scored the game winning TD at Oakland. Bell has proven to be productive when given the chance.
Another thing I find silly is that people keep saying Bell was only productive in Denver, Well guess what? We're running the same zone system that Denver runs, this year!!!! We might've been really lucky to get Tatum back and have a vet who has proven that he can be successful in this system. Tatum has a 4.8yd career average!!!!!
Kevin Smith and Tatum Bell will be a very good tandem. Kevin provides more power and Tatum provides more speed. Tatum also shares a quality that Kevin has, good vision! Both of these guys have experience in the zone system and should compliment each other. Keep Tatum this year and see how he preforms. A good Veteran backup RB is very valuable, just look at Minnesota when AP got hurt, Chester Taylor came in and kept the Run game productive.

Bell was productive in Denver and when it he had touches early in the season with the Lions. He is not an All-Pro, but he is and has been productive as part of a 2-back system. This year's zone blocking scheme plays into his strengths and Kevin Smiths.

The worst thing the Lions could do in my opinion is cut Tatum Bell. Tatum adds depth and is the only RB besides Kevin Smith that has experience running the ball in zone blocking to my knowledge. I am not in favor of keeping Tatum long term though he helps us now.

Or a 1000 yard rusher for that matter. Tatem is not an every down back....he's not great between the tackles or at holding onto the ball.....but...he's a homerun threat...blazing speed ...if he can get the edge he's gone. Lets run the rookie and spell him with Tatem.

as much as I am NOT a fan of Tatum Bell, there is no way we should cut him. It's not like Kevin Smith is a sure thing, no rookie is, so we need Bell right now. I agree with LWW, Bell isn't any sort of long-term answer, but his value on this team has never been higher than it is right now.

I am worried though, if Smith beats out Bell for the starter's job, that Bell will quit on his team just like he did a year ago. Martz or no Martz, there are a lot of veterans on this team that suffered through a 1-7 finish, and I don't think they looked kindly on Bell.

I think the opposite. If they were in bells shoes they would want to be on the field, not blackballed on the bench in favor of an 80% healthy Kevin Jones. Bell wanted in, to contribute , to showcase some talent because it was his contract year. The coaches screwed Bell big time. Then the back slap of cutting Jones!?
The veterans on the team that know the score, respect bell for keeping his head up , practicing hard (by all accounts Ive read including Marinelli)'s and mostly by keeping his mouth shut. That was classy. I know classy and Tatum Bell sound weird in the same sentence but, there it is. If he wasnt a Marinelli guy he wouldnot be in a lion uniform right now...
