Jesse James.

While I do not agree with Horse Racing as a sport.

You are a MORON. Dude, if your going to post what you think are facts, Check them out first. Horses are NOT put into a pit and taught to maul and kick the crap out of each other. Are you really as stupid as your post sounds? Horses rarely lie down. And when too much pressure is placed on the other legs (While the bad one heals) they can develope a condition known as Laminitis which will destroy the other legs.

PETA, on this issue, is in the right church, but the wrong pew.  The jockey is in no way to blame for the tragedy that beset Eight Belles on Saturday.  All 20 horses in the Derby, as was Barbaro,  are descendants of  Native Dancer, who nearly won the Triple Crown in 1953.

The breeders are to blame here for mating Native Dancer's lineage so much that it has managed to shrink the gene pool and expose genetic flaws.  The heavily muscled legs of his progeny have given rise to ankle and hoof problems.  This is what happened to both Eight Belles and Barbaro.  75% of all thoroughbreds can be traced back to Native Dancer.  Until this irresponsible breeding practice is stopped, these injuries will continue to occur.

The breeders associations need to clean up their act, before government is forced to step in and do it for them.  I agree this is a definite cruelty to animals, but to supporters of the "sport"--it's all about the money, and that usually wins by more than just a nose.

a couple thoughts... first off in eight belles race previous to the derby(Fantasy @ oaklawn) she hopped a shadow near the finish line....did some sort of microfracture occur there? another thing...theres a reason why the kentuckyoaks(3yo filly equivalent to ky derby) is ran 1 1/8 miles instead of 1 1/4 miles...fillies generally shouldn't be running that far on dirt when they are really young.
all that stuff aside, all horses get examined by the track vet before they can go onto the track, so a lingering injury would of been noticed.  add to that no owner/ trainer would intentionally risk the life of a multi million dollar investment. also saez did not ride the filly hard at all. and finally its not like the filly was going to dirt for the 1st time in her career, most of her runs were at fair grounds (La) and Oaklawn(Ark) all of which are similar surfaces to churchill downs.  I would expect that an autopsy will be performed to see if there was some sort on anyeurism that caused the accident (most likely cause).

I forgot to include in my previous post......"any d0uche bag that has ever appeared on american idol"

PETA, like their media wh*ore friends, finds a way to stick its nose it business it doesnt need to be sticking it into.  They should be fighting real fights like dogfighting, cock fighting, and other true cruelty cases.  What is next, protest the weiner dog nationals!  Most of the horses in racing are treated very well due to the fact that they are money makers for those involved.

PETA = PITA

(Pain In the A$$)

When I lived in DC some time ago, on the way to an important biz mtg, a bunch of peta thugs were throwing "talc bombs" on people that walked by a fur store . . . WALKED BY the store, didn't enter it or anything. They have no respect for anyone, and I only have PITY for PITA (oops pEta)!

Dog fighting and Horse racing cannot be compared since they are not even close.  The purpose of dog fighting is for one dog to injure or kill the other dog.  Horse racing is not meant to injure or kill the horses whatsoever.  You may or may not like horse racing, but dont even try to compare it to dog fighting.

I'm not a particular fan of horse racing, but the initial post is exactly correct in that PETA doesn't deserve all the press.  PETA's activities often blur the line between activist protest and criminal act.  They shouldn't get media attention whenever they yell "Fire!"

PETA really has no claim in this. They are the same people that expect no human on earth to eat meat...why don't they also try to stop lions, and tigers from eating other animals (I say this just to point out how moronic some of their beliefs are). What happened to Eight Belles was just a tragic accident. I have been to countless horse races for all my life and I have never seen a horse break both ankles, its a freak injury. It's like a 25 year old in perfect health one day dropping dead of a heart attack. Rare..but it happens. The jockey and trainer in no way should be blamed for what happened. Larry Jones had her well prepared..enough so that she ran 2nd only to a monster of a race horse named Big Brown. Gabriel Saez, all he did was do his job and ride her to a 2nd place finish in the Kentucky Derby....for all those people that saw Larry Jones and Gabriel Saez don't know what they are doing..see their result from the day before in the Kentucky Oaks on Proud Spell. PETA just needs to go away..period.
