Peta is in the forefront on the ethical treatment of animals.  They really mean business.  I think there are legitimate questions about horse racing.    I could not figure out how a young healthy animal could break both her ankles, AT THE SAME TIME!  Now I see the only real possible explaination  is the jockey made her keep running when she was injured.  These horses bust their butts for these owners and some love to run.  I don't see why they can't  eliminate using whips all together after they have been trained throughly using voice and physical cues.  This training would occur before they start to race these high stakes races.  It would go a long way to tell which horses love to run and which are really the best jockys.  I'm not watching any more horse races until they do something,  I do realize it's doubtful they care what I think.

Most of the PETA folks I have come across are hypocritical people.  They condemn peolple like myself (A Beef Producer) and mock our way of living.  They do this as they stand their with their leather shoes and belts.

Now I do agree that something is amiss with horse racing.  Barbaro, and now Eight Belles..I can think of at least three other horses that were put down after one of the triple crown races...something has to be done.  These horses are being pushed to the limit everytime out there...they need a break.

good ideas but here is some food for thought.  a sprinter just completed a 500 meter race; does the sprinter immediately put on his brakes and stop running? negative, he has to slow down first and cool off, same goes with the horses. they cant just run a mile and then stop on a dime, thats what the extra 1/4 mile was for. as far as the whips go? horses are like children, it doesnt matter how many times you beat them/whip them, sometimes it just dont stick in their heads. a horse is 1000+ lbs and i dont think a small leather whip is going to really injure the horse. the jockey did the right thing by keeping the horse off the railing? whats more devastating; a dead horse or a dead horse and the jockey? as far as the horses actual injuries? i played baseball, football and hockey for my whole life (20+ years) and have had numerous injuries. i was noted as being in somewhat of perfect health but still managed to get injured. once time i slid into second base head-first and broke both of my wrists AT THE SAME TIME! perfect health plus a freak accident DOES NOT EQUAL negligence. you cant blame the jockey, trainers or track for what happened. it was a freak accident, it happens, the horses cant survive if they cant walk because they have casts on BOTH of their front feet. whoever gets the horses carcass is going to have some top dollar glue.

PETA is absolutely clueless on this as they are on virtually every issue.  They are a borderline terrorist organization with their attempts to raise awareness.  I support whole-heartedly the response of the people closely associated with Eight Belles and their explanation of what happened.  The investment made by these people in training and racing their horses makes it absultely ludicrous to think they would deliberately harm an animal.  If you want to find abuse of animals it is easy enough to do so when you look at how some people treat their pets.  To through the horse racing community in with them is preposterous.  I wish to point out that I am not affiliated with the horse racing community and have attended all of one horse race in my life.  I have no vested interest in this unlike the hypocrits with PETA.

I have played sports my whole life too and am in perfect health and i am 52.    How ever I didn't break both my ankles running.  I got hurt , as you say playing football or sliding into second or coming down on someone's foot in basketsball not just running!  Something is wrong there.

tarheelguy:

So what your saying is that your experiences concerning injurys is the standard all humans and animals should be measured against ? Hey big guy I fell awkwardly while playing basketball and broke BOTH my wrists. Freak accident thats all it was. I always hate to say the word you people, BUT Why Why WHY does someone always have to be at fault? Why? As Forest Gump said "Shit Happens"

Glad your in perfect health, not all of us are.

I will say this though. Why is it OK for horses to be given steroids for racing, For our gain I might add. But We as humans go crazy over the thought of baseball players cheating by using basically the same type of product?

Ok breaking both ur wrists is hard to understand but that is still much more understandable than simply running.  HOW DOES RUNNING MAKE U BREAK 2 ANKLES.

PETA are a bunch of malinformed idiots.  These are the same morons who object to crating a dog (when it's the safest way to transport them!) and think that the way to prevent too many kittens and puppies is to end all pet ownership.  BTW, they alos kill pets they take in (97% at their NC shelter!) and two workers were found to be illegally dumping the carcasses.  They also fund the ALF, a domestic terrorist group, in the same way that Sinn Fein fronted the IRA.

For PETA, it's not about the animals.  It's about political power, period.  The same goes for their pals HSUS.

Obviously, you know little about the sport and the animals involved. I'm 54 years old and have been around the sport my entire life. These are 1000lb.+ animals with ankles as small as yours. The reason many of the top class horses break down has much more to do with stress and duress, aka 'class'. When you put top class horses together and one is unable to do what had previously seemed so easy for them, it puts undo stress on their ability to do what they know how to do. This filly had never run against colts, yet her owner and trainer made a fatal decision to do it the first time against the best males of her generation in the most difficult race in the world to win, The Kentucky Derby. It'd be like you going into a gym with a bunch of body builders and assuming you can bench press the same weight they are. If you are enormously strong, you might be able to do so, but, could you keep doing it like them without any affect? Of course not. And, neither could she. But, it was to be expected, the outcome, that is. It was a stupid and foolish plan on their part and now they must suffer the consequenses. It wasn't the jockey at fault here, but the owner and trainer, plain and simple.

I'm a huge racing fan and if you want to see less break downs on the track, you need to speak up about synthetic racing surfaces(Polytrack).  The major tracks in California have them as well as Keenland in Kentucky.  They drastically cut down on horse fatalities.  If they switch all tracks to polytrack it will probably mess up the breeding industry which is where the real money is made.  As the saying goes....money is power.

I am huge on ethical treatment for animals, I go out of my way to to ensure the food I eat and products I use do not harm animals however; I am a fan of horse racing but not as much anymore.  Breaks both ankles and the jockey is whipping the hell out of the horse and still finishes 2nd, something just doesn't sound right here.  There is more to this than the trainer or jockey are letting on.  The one thing I have got from listening to what the experts have said is that these horses are run far to young while their bones are just to brittle to be exposed to the conditions they are.  As far as PETA they seem like everything else sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't I happen to think they are taking this one to far, but questions do need to be answered.

The reason the horse was being whipped so hard is because it's the Kentucky Derby.  It's the biggest race of the year.  There are literally hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake from 2nd to 3rd place.  I'm not sure why the trainer and the jockey are being held as the scapegoats.  This could have happened to any of the other horses in field.

Sorry but PETA is an authority on one thing: getting media attention.

They operate an animal shelter with one of the worst records of euthanizing animals in the country. And this is not a small shelter by any stretch of the imagination. At the same time they protest shelters with exceptional records at actually getting animals adopted instead of put down.

I have no problem with your questioning horse racing. But don't base your questions on anything said by an organization that exists to generate media attention (and contributions) far more than it does to actually work to save animals.
