I really thought last season that the Braves should have traded Andruw Jones before the All-Star break, because it was obvious that New Ownership had no intentions of re-signing him. Remember guys, when it comes to resigning Big Tex, the money will be there!
Mike Hampton is in his last season of the 8-Year/121 Million deal. He does have a Club Option for 2009, but I will roll over and die if the Braves pick up that option. That puts $15 million dollars available for some Free Agent signings or to resign Big Tex.
2009 Free Agents to be:
These are the ones I felt are interesting:
Marcus Giles
Rafael Furcal
Joe Crede
Pat Burrell
Adam Dunn
Vladimir Guerrero
Pitchers:
Jon Garland
Brad Penny
CC Sabathia
Ben Sheets
What do you guys think?

If we could manage to get any of those pitchers I would be happy, but I'm not sure I see it happening. Rafael Furcal would be sweet, but we don't really need him at the position. Plus Joe Torre is already in love with that guy. He'll be in a Dodgers uniform next year.

That's a really tough call. I don't personally like Jon Garland and Ben Sheets (although a great pitcher) is too much of an injury risk to take a chance on. Vladdy makes no sense because of Frenchy in right field. Crede... eh, if Chipper is still around then he wouldn't want to come here. Marcus Giles is not worth it, I know he had some good season for us, but Kelly Johnson is doing well and getting better.
The thing with Tex is whether or not he would be willing to sign a short-term deal or if he is looking to lock in a long term contract. I think the Braves are hoping guys like Tyler Flowers or Jason Heyward can keep progressing quickly so they can move in to that first base slot. Teixeira hasn't lived up to the hype so far, but he's normally a slow starter so I wouldn't worry about his bat.
I would like to see us land a guy like Brad Penny with the money from Mike Hampton though. I think he's a reliable starter that doesn't do anything incredible, but he puts up quality start after quality start which is what the Braves really need at this point in time.

I would like to see the Braves trade Tex for two MLB ready top pitching prospects. Last year it would have been Phillip Hughes and Joba Chamberlain. Idk what this year looks like i haven't scouted yet. So i will just throw out a couple of names (D-Backs) Micah Owings, Max Scherzer and Jarrod Parker. Owings isnt a prospect anymore, but he is still young. Bring in two or three guys that are young to go with Jair Jurrjens and Jo-Jo Reyes. I dont think we will need to address our starting rotation for many many years.

I like it 14 Straight, I definitely like the idea of signing legit starting pitchers instead of hitters. We have tons of good prospect hitters battling in the minor leagues, including Steroid Popper Schafer.
CC, if he gets it together like last season, will have a contract around 5-6 years, and around 15-20 million a year, can the Braves afford that?

14 i like the way you think. Is Jason Heyward MLB ready yet or does he need very much more polishing? I was hoping they would turn him into a first baseman

Is Jason Heyward MLB ready yet or does he need very much more polishing? At least one more year are the indications I have heard. I would say the ETA is 2010. In my scenario, Heyward would move to first and take over when he's ready. Our '09 1B would be a stop gap, very much like Kotsay for this year.

100%. I think your numbers are a bit low on both years, and dollars, but the Braves should have a ton of $ coming off the payroll next year.
- Tex: 12.5 million
- Smoltz(maybe) 14 million
- Glavine(maybe) 8 million
- Hampton: 15 million(I think)
- Kotsay: 2 million
That's a maximum of $51 million coming off the books. Rafael Soriano makes about 4 million more next year, so 41 million left over.
25 for C.C and 15 for Penny? Could happen. Like I said, it would require a payroll increase to account for other moves, but nothing huge. It's still just a pipedream, but that's a big time team right there. If only I was the Braves GM. :(. LOL.

As for CC, I think thats a bit of a stretch. It really isn't. The Yanks won't go over 25 million, I don't think. With a $5 million payroll increase, we could have a 1-2-3 punch of C.C., Penny, and Hudson. Wow. Just wow.

1. There was no way we could have traded Andruw Jones before the all star break last year. He had full veto rights being a 10-5 player, and thus could nix any trade we chose. Since he had 20+m on his mind, there wouldn't have been any team willing to take him.
2. Everyone forgets the picks we get when we lose a player like Tex or Andruw to free agency. These picks are valuable, and not to be underestimated.
3. It takes 2 people to work out a contract. We can throw offers at him all day, but if he decides that he doesn't want to work on a contract until the end of the season then it doesn't matter what we want.
4. Would you really be willing to trade him at the deadline if we are 1 game ahead in the standings? How 'bout 1 game behind? Doesn't make much sen | |
