Who would your FIRST pick be to start that team with. They have to be CURENT players, no going back in time and picking Gretzky or Lemieux or any of that. So who would it be.
For me it would be Alexander Ovechkin. Can't argue with his goals and total points, and his assist total shows he gets teammates involved but there is more to it than that for me. His +/- is incredibly good for a forward/center and he is still young and still getting better and he has shown, to date anyway, that he is very durable.
Anyway I will put up a few random candidates but tell me who you would choose and why. There is no wrong answer, well yes there is but we'll debate that  .

My choice? Ovie. Still young, and he can put pucks in the net no matter who he is with. Probably the best franchise player in the League now.
Crosby - injury risk, sometimes overplays things. On the plus side your team would get a lot of positive pub.
Malkin - slightly below ovechkin, same type player.
Lidstrom - way too old to start a team with.
Heatley - good player but doesn't always give 100% IMO.
Datsyuk - Not even the best guy on his team. no slouch, though.
Statsny - Good, just not good enough. 2nd best upside though, and good genes.
I'm surprised that there was no young goalie. Carey Price or maybe Lundqvist, DP, or MAF would be a good place to start, as you're nothing without goalies ( see Lightning).

I actually thought about putting up some goalies but that is why I put up "other" as a category, whatever you guys think just tell me why.

Other. I'd pick any goalie from the 4 remaining playoff teams because to help get your team that far, youre worth starting to build a team around. Actually, you could start a team with any top 10 NHL goalie because as we all know you build a team from the netminder out.

Quality goaltending is a must for any team no doubt about that but you have to be able to put the puck in the net on a quality goaltender as well. A microcosm example of this is this past series between the Pens and Rangers, while both Fleury and Lundqvist are excellent net minders in my opinion Lundqvist was the better netminder in the series but Fleury got ALOT more help from the Pittsburgh offense, so there is both sides to look at

why not?he led the league in gaa in the reg season andd so far in the playoffs and was the better half of the jennings trophy tandem granted was more the defense but hes definitely a gamer!

Other guys have better stats but Mike Richards is a great leader and future captain so i would rather stick with him than risk losing chemistry on any of these other guys.

Lidstrom, doesn't matter if he's old, he's experienced. I would have Lidstrom but a whole bunch of strong young defenseman working with Nick. Lidstrom would teach them all the skills they need to know before he retires. You need to have a few experienced guys on the team, even if its new. Besides, he's still arguably the best defenseman outhere right now.
As far as goaltending is concerned, probobly Ryan Miller or Nabokov. They're pretty young and good. I really don't have anything else backing my choice up but I like them as goaltenders so I just picked them.
As far as offense, Ovechkin. But what if, there was a team that had another Russian Five composed of Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Malkin, Zubov and some other Russian defenseman. That would be a sick line wouldn't it?

Probably a homer vote here too. I would pick Brendon Morrow. What a beast he has been. He is still fairly young so you could build with him. I have seen very few players who play with passion he does night in and night out. He can score and hand out assists. He is also not afraid to get get in there and scrap it up. I love to see a captain lead by example.
