...before mid May

Congrats to him.

They should think about a reward to the minors; it helped him last year.

Yep--it isn't even the end of the first week of May which makes that dubious stat stand out even more ( and he has PH a couple of times and was benched at least 2 other games. )

Amazing, Howard could not only pass a realistic 150K by the all-star break, but far surpass his own MLB record of 199 K's he had last year...

Still think he is the best 1B in baseball?

I was wondering what the Phillies fans thought of Ryan Howard's strikeout total, so I thought I'd jump over here.  Do you guys think management is trying to wait until Jimmy Rollins gets back before howard gets sent down for a few days?

Let me start my post by saying i'm a Braves fan.

Now, we all have heard that Ryan Howard is a slow starter and he will heat up, but this is bordering ridiculous now.

50 strikeouts on May 7!! ARe you kidding me!!

It's one thing to be hitting .163 because you can still be making productive outs.  But there is no such thing as a productive strikeout.

He does have some close company though, Arizona's Mark Reynolds already has 45 Ks.

This really is a new era of baseball.  When it is ok to strikeout as long as you can hit a long home run every now and then.  SAD

Oh and if Ryan Howard doesn't heat up it won't break my heart.  Just one less obstacle for the Braves to surpass on their way to the NL East title in 2008.  (It will hurt my fantasy team though!  LOL)

the phils spent $10 mil for 1 yr for freddy garcia and got nothing.

now they are spending $10 mil to see Ryan Howard off to ANOTHER cold april and now may. he has 50 k's. he's batting .167 with 6 hrs!

face it folks...every pitcher in the NL knows how to throw to him. throw it low, outside and off-speed and he can't hit it. his mvp season he crushed the ball to the opposite field. know he can't. he's  not worth $10 mil this season or the $15-18 mil he wants after arbitration.

the phils are cheap and we know this. they won't pay this salary. so, instead of losing him to free agency or the Red Sox, Mets or Yankees - trade him within the next 2 yrs for a tier II OR III 1B and a top notch starting pitcher !

trade him while he still has value!! look at the flyers - they are stuck with simon gagne and his 4 yr deal bc of concussion syndrome. trading howard while he has value  can only help the club. the flyers are stuck with gagne now ! he's another lindros and premieu.

bf all of you give me 1's and start yelling at me - tell me this... why keep him when he will have over 200 K's, start off slow every april and want between $15-18 mil ??

Yes the Phillies need to trade him now before other teams find out just how bad he is.

yeah, trade him now, while teams still think he is good (that makes sense...).  that way, the Phillies can watch him heat up and hit 35-40 HR for someone else!  don't wait for him to heat up and provide some value to your offense first, thereby increasing his trade value as well, ostensibly.

Ryan Howard does this every year.  he starts out slow in april, and in may too last year, then goes on a tear.  teixeira is the same way - they are slow starters.  every team in baseball knows this, so i think just about any team would gladly take him, and they don't need to be duped into thinking he is good.  they already know he is.
