Why not just use Churgh at First if we can't get Nady back.

Texiera, I think, will either resign with the Braves or be signed by the Yankees. The Yankees also have tons of money coming off the books.

Howard is a long shot and like Maximus said Philly will be unlikely to trade him to a division rival.

I think the best  3 options are:

  1. through a off season trade
  2. Sign Sexson
  3. move F-Mart to first now and call him up for 2009

problem with trading for nady for prospects... is we really dont have the prospects left to do it(or should i say prospects to spare)...

but yeah that would be a great trade... if they dont have to give up too much...

he is worth it.. got off to a hot start this year...

and with the Mets he was good too...

i would love to see him back

and tartans is right no way the Phillies would give howard to the mets...

but i think the mets do have a shot at texiera if the wilpons dont mind opening the wallet...

I got it - Trade for Scott Hatteberg and move F-Mart to 1B while he's in AA still.

I would like to see the Mets go after Sean Casey , Eric Hinske , Doug Mienkiewicz , or Richie Sexon. I think these guys are the best of the bunch that we would have a good chance of getting. I would also like to call up Michael Abreu or Mike Carp as a backup.

I have my doubts about Howard because of the Phillies not wanting to deal him to a divisional rival, but I don't think Texiera will be out of reach.  Yes, the Mets at this point only have Maine, Santana, and Pelfrey as signed SP for next season and will have to address pitching, but they lose Pedro and his nearly $12 million/year contarct, Delgado's $16 million, El Duque's $7 million, Alou's $7.5 million, and Perez's $6.5 million.  I believe they will try to resign Perez, but that still leaves plenty of salary space to go after another stud starter AND Texiera.  Plus with them moving into the new stadium and wanting to build hype for it and their new TV network, I don't think they'll be trying to cut costs.

There really aren't too many top tier guys that would be available via trade, but there are a few teams that have young guys coming up and could maybe move a guy for the right price.  It's really looking like it would have to be a conversion though.  What about someone like Adam Dunn in Cincy or Austin Kearns (as I'm watching the game...), or one of those guys from the crowded St. Louis outfield like Ludwick or Schumaker?  There are other guys around that would at least be decent filler, like Aubrey Huff or (if the Indians were willing) Ryan Garko.

This is an interesting question...it's hard to get a guy without giving up a valuable young bat, but I can't see settling for one of the mediocre free agents instead of picking up either a backup 1B with upside or a good OF that could be converted.
