Well, Sergio Garcia took the early lead today with a -6. Others are still on the course, but this will probably hold up throughout the rest of the day and end up being low score for day 1. I wouldn't be too concerned about Sergio still being there on Sunday though. He seems to break through every now and then with a super round, but he just can't keep it going for any period of time. i would be surprised if he finishes in the top 10 come Sunday. Anyone think Sergio will win this week? Of course, he has about the same chance that John Daly does at winning in Italy! :)

LOL now that was cheap shot!
Weir is due for a win at the players. I had thought it was Ames week to win but that 17th today didn't help him at all.

Most of the leading scores (including Sergio's) were posted in the morning today. The course is playing more difficult in the afternoon, and commentators are saying there is about a 2-stroke difference between the morning and afternoon scores. However, it is seemingly not bothering JB Holmes who is -4 through 13, with his first bogey of the day just costing him a stroke there. Hole 17 is taking its toll as usual ... 15 balls in the drink so far. This is a great championship!

DD: Just poking a little fun ... actually I would love to see Daly win again. His surgery last month supposedly took care of a muscle tear in his stomach that was bothering him on his swing. He hasn't played that well even after the surgery, but it does take a while to get everything working again. A top 10 finish would be an excellent way to start making a comeback.

Is there a list somewhere that shows the stats for the 17th hole?

You're right IHO: that is a pretty funny statement. I was just passing on something I had read, but if I had thought about it a littlle, I would have changed it to "surgery to repair a flubber tear in his stomach".

DD: I haven't been able to find any list or website dedicated strictly to stats for the 17th hole. I've been watching the tournament on the golf channel, and before play began, one of the analysts predicted 5 balls in the drink at 17 today. As I mentioned in my earlier post, there have already been 17 hit in the water, and the other analysts have been "ragging" on the person that made that prediction. The green has hardened up this afternoon and anyone going for the flag stick (at the back of the green, and not far from the water) is having a very difficult time keeping the ball on the green. Even the balls hit from the drop area are no sure thing.

Sergio has been struggling with his putting style and which putter to use. Maybe he has it figured out for a while. I need this win from him for my fantasy team!!!! Also watch out for fred Couples he has posting a few l;ow rounds lately, the sly guy can still win one
GO SERGIO!!!!!!

2cents,
. His surgery last month supposedly took care of a muscle tear in his stomach that was bothering him on his swing.
They determined it was not a muscle tear but he accidentally swallowed a beer bong after chugging a 6 pack in 14 seconds.
As for Garcia...he certainly has the tee to green game...if his putter is fixed he can win any tournament. Short game confidence is all he needs. It SOUNDS like he has his putter fixed.

CHER: That would certainly make a big difference. I don't know how many times I've watched him miss 5-footers, and sometimes quite badly. If he could putt (and maybe now he can), he could probably take off about 5 or more strokes per tournament. That would surely bring in a couple of wins. I think it's been over 50 tournaments since he last won, so I'll have to see it to believe it. Maybe this will be the week. He's dropped a shot today, but still doing okay.

Garcia seems to have an attitude problem that prevents him from accepting the reality that he's not winning because he won't grow up and take golf seriously. I doubt he has the work ethic to or the mental toughness to win. Too bad, because just like John Daly, he has the ability but not the temperment. What a waste!
I'm still rooting for him and I hope he wins and decides that he really wants to be "the one" to challange Tiger. No one else seems to want that role.

CHER: Just heard on CBS golf coverage that Sergio has made ONE putt of greater than 10 feet this week through the first 2 1/2 rounds. Not stellar by anyone's imagination. Still, he's hitting just about every fairway and green in regulation and giving himself a chance, so he's still hanging pretty tough. Good grief, imagine what this guy could do if he could putt.

Well, make that 2 putts over 10 feet, as Sergio just sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the 9th. Looks like he's trying to make me eat my words ("don't worry about Sergio being in the lead".) He's playing like he really wants to win, but let's see what Sunday does to him. He closed out last year with a 66, and if he could do that again, I think that would clinch a win. Watch out for Anthony Kim though .... he's making a move!
