As reported by Comcast SportsNet:
The Flyers suffered a major blow before the opener of their Eastern Conference Final series with the Penguins.
Defenseman Kimmo Timonen will miss the remainder of the postseason with a blood clot in his left ankle.
Timonen, the team’s top defenseman, was hit by a shot in Game 4 against Montreal and played in Game 5.
"Major blow" is a huge understatement here.

This sucks! But I am still confident that we can and will stop malkin and crosby and hossa if we make sure are forwards give extra defensive help.
LETS GO Flyers!!!

Sorry to hear that, RC ... sincerely I am. I would rather both teams have as many of their players available, and Timonen is one of the best ... very underrated. Still going to be a great series, but that is a "major blow".

CrowDog,
Can someone from the Flyers put a sledgehammer to Malkin's knee then to even it out? haha
But in all seriousness, I nearly cried when I heard this.
Time to step it up, boys!!!!!

He should play anyway. Just turn his leg the other way when blocking shots that is all.

I agree, Crow. It sucks when one of the best players on a team is out for a series like this, with this much importance on it. Better to have all healthy line-ups and let the best team win.
I also agree with Tark.. one of the top Pens should be taken out, it's only fair!! haha
This both sucks and blows at the same time. I wonder why it took so long tho, Game 4 was like 8 days ago, and they're only now figuring out that he has a blood clot?
Here's more:
Kimmo Timonen, the nine-season NHL veteran, likely will miss the rest of the playoffs with a blood clot in his left ankle. Timonen told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the blood clot formed after he was hit with a shot during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals series against Montreal. When the soreness did not dissipate, Timonen had the ankle checked out where a blood clot was found. Timonen had six assists during the playoff run.
"We have to view this that he's not a player for us in the series, and march on," Holmgren said Thursday night.
Timonen is the Flyers' top defenseman and played a crucial role in shutting down Washington's Alex Ovechkin for most of the seven-game, first-round series. Timonen was fantastic at anticipating plays, attacking Ovechkin with the puck and taking away space to create easy goals.
He was just as effective against Montreal's Alex Kovalev, and was being counted on to limit Pittsburgh's top forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Holmgren said Timonen, who didn't make the trip to Pittsburgh, is injured right where he ties up the skate.
"Obviously, you can't replace a player that does what Kimmo does for us," Holmgren said.
Jaroslav Modry or Ryan Parent will fill Timonen's roster spot.

That sucks really bad. Really bad.
But these things happen. Thats why the teams that made it this far have depth. Its time to find out which young wants to step up to the plate and be the guy who shuts down Sidney Crosby. Maybe it doesn't happen, but this is a huge opportunity for somebody. Jones? Coburn? This is the kind of situation that makes somebody out of nobody.
Damn, this sucks really bad.

The nine-year veteran discovered the severity of the injury after a hospital visit Thursday morning. Timonen said the doctor told him if the clot improves in the next two weeks, there would be a small chance he could play again this season. Still, Timonen knows a return to the lineup is unlikely.
"It's the most disappointing thing in my hockey life, for sure," he said.
"How many times in your lifetime do you get to play in the conference finals or the Stanley Cup finals?" Timonen said.
Timonen played Game 5 against the Canadiens, and felt numbness in his toes and foot that never went away. Timonen, who has six assists in the postseason, is on blood thinners. He had a similar injury earlier in his career with Nashville, but said that clot was much more painful and noticeable than this one.
Holmgren said the Flyers weren't taking any chances.
"If he gets hit again, a lot of problems could arise," he said.
It's a real shame for someone like Kimmo, ya gotta feel for the guy.. to get to his first Conf. Finals, with a chance to get to the Stanley Cup, and he goes down right before it starts. Granted, he can still get the ring and be part of a Cup team if by some chance they were able to get thru this without him playing.. but that's gotta feel pretty empty for him to not actually be out there and help them to get it. We'll just have to get back here next year, and have him healthy, and bring it on home (again?)!

This is most definitely a tough break for the Flyers. Kimmo Timonen is/was a major link in the Flyers defenseive chain. You gotta believe, that not one game has been played, and the Penguins already smell some blood in the water. Injuries are part of the game, but this is just a very unfortunate one for the Flyers blueline especially against a team like Crosby, Malkin, Sykora, Hossa and the rest of the Penguins.

Normally I don't mind a hurt Flyer but a clot is slightly more serious than your average injury. Let's hope they break it and it doesn't travel. Good luck Timonen.

No question. The guy's health is the biggest concern here. I have experience treating this condition and it can be very serious. If it travels distally down the foot he could lose his toes. If, by chance, it travels to his lungs, he could lose his life. Best wishes to Kimmo and his family.
From a hockey perspective, sure it's a big loss, but things like these can bring a team even closer together. When Mario went out with a fracture to his hand in the Rangers series in 92' during the Pens last cup run, the team stepped up their level of play another notch and annhialated everyone after that. I don't think they lost another game the rest of the playoffs. And I'm sure losing Mario to what the team had to think was a season ending injury dwarfs the shock of losing Kimmo, a very good player to be sure.
The Pens would be crazy to underestimate a team like the Flyers because of a loss like this. I certainly don't think they will, that's why I still have them Victorious in 6 games, with 3 games being determined in overtime. This will be a fantastic physical playoff series to be decided by the closest of margins, with or without Timonen.

My first thought was, can they CUT IT OUT. Funny me saying that since I think medicine needs to cut less and I get radical and want to cut this.
I know the cut itself would probably take a few weeks to allow playing unless near surface. Is it near surface? Now that I type this, I feel stupid thinking about the consequences ... I mean, you are dealing with a serious thing, a blood clot, and I want to cut the area and cause a bloodier mess!
As I said, stupid me. But still, can they cut it out??????

What a blow to him, his teamates, and the fans of Philly. I feel like I just found out I owe 10k in back taxes. Like it has already been said, they got to step in and fill the holes. All the really good teams do it, in any sport. I believe in these guys. Quietly, it will be a motivator for them, WIN IT FOR KIMO. Even so, losing one of the best defensemen in the league sucks serious ass. Only time will tell. I never saw yet where it states he is done for the whole playoffs. Hopefully I am right, but I am sure he will be told not worth the chance. Breaking up a clot is slow moving SOB. Good luck Timo, I long to see you on the ice.

Here is what I had hope to hear.
The only hope for Timonen to return this season, he said, is that if a follow up visit to the doctor at the end of next week shows that the blood thinners are working more quickly than expected.
