Tiger is a great golfer but there is more to the PGA then just Tiger Woods.  Why don't people see that?  Look at this week's tourney.  9 out of the 10 top players in the world are playing.  Everyone but Tiger cause of his knee.  Who wouldn't want to go out and watch this tourney?   Like 45 out of the top 50 players in the world at playing this week! Who cares if Tiger isn't in the tourney, this is going to be a great one to watch whether I'm at home in my chair watching it or at the course.  People who just think the PGA is just Tiger Woods and nothing else need their head examined.  He is a great golfer, maybe the best of all time BUT if he isn't playing doesn't mean the tourney isn't worth watching.  Wake up people!

I am a fan of golf and will watch whether Tiger is playing or not.  I agree with you that there are plenty of stars to watch this week.  The big difference to me is that I see fans at events who normally would not watch golf, they are there to watch Tiger.  He brings out all types of fans, not just golf fans.

I love golf, watch every tournament wether Tiger is playing or not, I grew up on a golf course having a father who was a golf pro.  The point of this though is not that there is more to golf than Tiger because people will still watch the tournament, ON TV, what they are saying are people won't pay to go watch the tournament live because he is not there and it is very true.  I had weekend passes for this week, and I sold them the second I heard Tiger was going to miss.  It's not worth me driving three hours because I wanted to see him and thats what they are saying in the article.  A lot more people are willing to drive a while to see him and when he is not there, they are not, so they have been missing out on a lot of fans

because people will still watch the tournament, ON TV,

And even then, the TV ratings will still be lower because he is not playing.  Even when he is not in contention (which is seldom), the ratings are still decent because he will get airtime.

Tiger Woods will come and go (as did Nicklaus and Palmer before him), and the PGA Tour will go on its merry way, but it is undeniable that he 'moves the needle.'  Even a player of Mickelson's stature (both in play and in fan appeal) will acknowledge Woods' overall economic impact on the sport.  And all that money starts with the fan-base.

AAAAAce,

I agree and feel your pain. Glad you found a taker for those tickets.

The article isn't describing the quality of the event but the lure of it. Do fans want to see good golf or do they want to be part of a historic event, and want it so badly that they're willing to shell out extra money for the opportunity? I live in Augusta, and I can tell you the excitement level in this town is dramatically different when Tiger is in the hunt for the green jacket. This last year the course was half empty by the time the leaders finished up because he was out of contention. Students working the event, merchants, hoteliers, wait staff, even homeowners would face major budget shortages if Tiger ever passed on us entirely, and that's even considering the great allure that The Masters has.

It does no good to preach about how wrong that is, it just is. If the Florida media doesn't care about the TPC, there's a huge disinterest out there.

I watch golf almost religiously...I am a huge Tiger fan but I find it nice to focus on some of the newer talent and established players outside of Tiger...it was great watching Anthony Kim win the first tourney of his career

As the original poster stated, the majority of the Top 50 golfers are in the field...I wouldn't skip it due to Tiger being injured...to me they must just be Tiger fanboys and not golf fans...

It's a shame people feel that way, but that's the way it is.  I was out there Wednesday and had a great time.  I'm headed out there tomorrow and I'm sure it will fun also.  You know it really shouldn't affect fans of Tiger because he doesn't really perform well here anyway.  He won it once a few years back, but he generally isn't in contention here.

Everything in here that was said is pretty much right on, and that is the problem.  The people passing on the tournament are missing an amazing tournament, but the problem is those people aren't really showing up for the tournament anyway.  The ones that only want to see Tiger weren't golf fans before Tiger and unfortunately may not be golf fans after he is on the Champions Tour.  The TV ratings will be lower for the same reason, Tiger draws individuals that are not really golf fans to watch the sport, which is both good and bad.  It is great to be more diverse, but it sucks when they don't stick around when he is not playing.  However, the few people who do turn to golf from just watching Tiger is a great thing and something that we should encourage, and try to encourage more of those fans to the game.

Maybe it's time for the PGA Tour to wake up and start using some influence with the networks to get them to promote others on tour besides Tiger.  Every telecast, whether he's playing or not, is starting to resemble a Tiger reality show.  Maybe CBS should change their acronym to TWN.

While they're at it, the PGA Tour might consider making prices for their events more affordable for the masses, particularly in light of the current economic downturn or whatever it is they're calling it these days.  Ten to fifteen years ago, the golf world was making great strides in growth across the economic spectrum.  With that growth came a boon in the industry, followed by pricing to match the growth.  Now we have a ton of underplayed, overpriced golf courses that are starting to make the game a rich-man's sport once again.  I think the Tour would be much better served by making tickets attainable by all golf fans, not just a few.  (And do away with those $10 egg sandwiches and hot dogs!)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Tiger.  I love watching him play.  I also love watching Phil, Sergio, Ryan, Luke, and on and on.

Having tix to this event and Tiger Woods not playing could actually be a good thing.  Less people to jockey for position with, closer parking, shorter lines for the can, shorter lines at the beer tent.  Do I need to go on?  Don't get me wrong, I love watching Tiger play, but there are definitely pros with him not being there.  I used to go to Cog Hill to watch the Western Open every year.  After Tiger won there and started playing regularly, that place was a zoo!!  I've only been back once since.

Thehooks: The field is strong, as you say, and the tournament is great in itself. But what would make the tournament really worthwhile would be if 9 of the 10 top players in the world were actually in the top 10 in the tournament. That's what makes Tiger so popular and such a draw: He doesn't just show up; he either wins or places near the top tournament after tournament. The rest of the top 10 seem to make the cut one week, miss it the next, maybe place in the top 25 the next, etc. You get the picture: they're inconsistent. Even Phil and VJ have been having a tough time of late, and I think I would be more inclined to watch if either of them was in the running. If Anthony Kim stays in contention, I may watch it just to see how he fares. Otherwise, I may or may not be watching on Sunday, whereas I definitely would be if Tiger were competing.

I should have pointed this out in my earlier post (see above): even though 9 of the 10 top rated golfers in the world are participating in the TPC (Tiger being the one missing), not a single one of the 9 is among the top 10 in the tournament so far. Ernie Els (no. 4 OWGR) and Phil Mickelson (no. 2 OWGR) are tied for 13th right now, but none of the other golfers (Scott, Stricker, Ogilvy, Furyk, Choi, Singh, or Rose) are doing that well. Let's see some of the world's best at the top of the leader board; then we'll have a tournament worth watching.

My son is one of those ;'scalpers' and sales have been fairly good.  Firday and Saturday were the hotter tickets and Sunday is dead.  Guess there are plenty of guys out there getting it in before Mother's day.  Mom trumps.  I run a bait shop and same goes for fishging tomorrow....it will be slow, nothing to do with tiger.
