F-tiki and "his" #21 (as someone else said under your post)  . The guy tiki burried himself, with that crap, selfish, attitude he had towards the end of his playing career. I am more than 100% sure, being a giants and a canes fan,  phillips will represent #21 very nicely...

I spent alot of time agruing against La'Troy Hawkins getting #21 for the Yankees this year

some of it having to do with the kind of impact that Paul O'neil Made for the Yankees during his tenure

Now 1 year after Tiki Barber retires they give away his number

Here is a guy who has been pissing me off and disrespecting the team since he retired (and before that too)

but he did spend his whole career with the Giants and is # 17 on the NFL all-time rushing  Leaders list

there have been some great Running Backs that have played this game that is a huge deal!

I do not know if it is the right move

there is a difference between Paul O'Niel and Tiki Barber.

Paul didnt parade aroiund his last season trying to lobby for a job on the YES network, the way Tiki paraded around trying to be  a Good Morning Amrica host. God bless them both and Tiki too, for doing and getting what thye got after their playing careers, but Tiki, has to know he will and would be critisized for being a sel;fish, me me me me guy, to be heard after all the games... and he obviously was a divider between the Giants TEAM and coach coughlin. Thta si pretty obvious. hem hem hem SuperBowl!

Paul, in all farness, didnt even put up the numbers careerwise that Tiki did, in their respectable sports. Tiki blows Paul away as far as All-Tme status goes. Tiki is the best RB the Giants ever had... Paul O'Niell is like the Yankees 10th best outfielder.

Paul will be loved bc he ran down Luis Polonia's double in 1996 Atlanta on an bad hamstring, in the world series...  and Tiki will be remembered for running for 10,000 yards and..... his big fat mouth.

Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada told/asked/suggested Hawkins "not to wear #21 any more'- true story according to YES network... I dont think Eli Manning or Michael Strahan will be having ANY TALK with Kenny Phillips about his #21, and giving it up.

besides, its for recogniition of sean taylor .. anyway, like most of the former U Miami players are doing.

your team retires your # not just for stats  but respect from the fans and team to the player

you could be in the hall of fame  but if no1 liked you ( tikis case)  your not getting your number retired  ...its not a rule..tough shit..shoulda been a better teammate and player and not bash the damn organization you play for

the bottom line is when you Play for either the Yankees or the Giants in NY you are playing for a franchise that has History and there are certain stipulations that go along with that

in my Opinion if you are the greatest Running Back to ever play for the Giants you do not give his number away after 1 season

it is wrong and bush league......if it were an expantion team fine

but not a storied franchise like the GIANTS i think you are all wrong

I do not care how much smack he talked about the team or how he made things bad in the locker room.......he is the 20th best back ever in the NFL......

Honestly i am not even a huge Tiki Fan....he used to fumble all the time and lost us plenty of games before Coughlin taught him how to carry the ball

one of the reasons he got like that is b/c the G-men did not have a solid QB after simms and not untill Manning so he was the boss and the offense was changing

Here is I bet what happened....some dumb agent told hime that if he retires he is going to get some big commentator job.....souped his head up and totally sold him on the idea that he would be better off.....Now when he does jump ship he misses it......you ever hear of post Olympic depression well the same applies to all athletes it sounded like a good idea but now that he was not playing and was under the hot lights and cameras he realized he lost his passion and he sucked at commentating....So he was Bitter very Bitter and lost most if not all of his fans......sucks to be greedy sometimes it bites you in the a$$

I just think a few years before you give that number out is something that he had earned with his tenure with the Giants

and you know why the Eli comments hurt......b/c we were all afraid they might be true...and no one wanted to face the fact

then Eli comes back and everyone made such a huge deal about it

On a lighter note:

I accually went to the Yankee's 4/6/08 game vs Tampa Bay this year and busted some poor kids balls for a half hour at Stan's because he had a La'troy Hawkins Jersey (I knew it was a Paul O'Neil)

we laughed grabbed a few beers and headed in the game

but everyone i saw that day who had 21 on I brought up Hawkins just to make them crazy....I couldn't help myself
