Why is it that guys who have shown that they can play ball at a major league level such as Marshall, Cedeno, and Murton continue to get dumped on while guys who supposidly have the "talent" like Rich Hill and Felix Pie who are handed jobs in spring training.  I know that Pie lost his job in the first week but he was still the man going into the year.

Today Sean Marshall gets sent down for Scott Eyre who had a terrible year last year and I don't believe he will be any better than Marshall.  If anything Fox should have been sent down.  Does anyone else think this is unfair?

Yes I agree. I didn't know that Marshall was sent to the minors, and I certainly don't understand the move considering how badly Lieber pitched on Wednesday. Marshall was under 4.00 ERA in 20 starts last season and was pitching well in bullpen work this year. I really thought that he would be given the fifth starter spot and they would move Lieber back to long relief in the bullpen. Then you send Fox down and bring Eyre up to be your left handed specialst in the bullpen. Maybe they wanted to stretch out Marshall's arm by getting him some starts in the minors before throwing him in the rotation at this level. I like Marshall though; he deserves another shot as a starter.

Sean Marshall was sent down so that he could be stretched out to become a starter again.  Just like Hart, the Cubs are looking at these guys as insurance for the shaky starters, Marquis and Lieber.  One thing you cannot do in live games in the majors is take a guy who has been going an inning or less at a time and drop them into the rotation.  Eyre on the other hand, has no options and would have to clear waivers to be sent down.  It appears unfair, but it is exactly what the Cubs should do.

Great post jazzman, being sent down is not always about preformance. I am a big Matt Murton guy but he can't play CF and that's why he's not with the big club. Because they have no clear cut CF and need to have Felix Rie and Reed Johnson avaiable there's just no room on a 25 man roster.

Along with stretching him out I think it is very important to him to have good consecutive starts while down in the minors.  Both he and Rich Hill are head cases and could really benefit from getting their confidence back.

Why Marshall was set down vs Fox (???) is beyond me. The bullpen needs 2 lefties more than a sub-par RH. Got to question that move.

I've been impressed with Chad Fox thus far. He appears to have picked up right where he left off three years ago, which is amazing given the surgeries and the amount of time he's spent away from the game. I almost feel more confident sending him in there over Michael Wuertz or even Bob Howry at this point.

Fox is a better option than Wuertz so far but I'm always afraid every pitch will be his last one.  I'm cool with Marshall going down to Iowa if he is indeed going to stretch out to be a starter again.  Works for me.

for Scott Eyre who had a terrible year last year

Other than the fact that he only gave up 1 run the entire second half of the year last year.

while guys who supposidly have the "talent" like Rich Hill and Felix Pie who are handed jobs in spring training

Hill was given the job because he pitched well last year and Pie was given his because he had basically no one else

Scott Eyre terrible year? Terrible half yes? Great second half hell yea as Don has already stated in the post above me.

I hope Marshall is brought back to start I would really like to see this. I think he is the best option we have right now!!!!!!! I would like to see Hill brought back eventually provided he does really well in the minors but not right away now after Lieber got bombed. Lieber should get a few more starts to prove himself.

Just pray that no injuries happen to the top of this rotation because it looks to be one of the strongest in the league. Certainly the best top half of the staff in this division.

Sean Marshall's demotion was not performance based. If nothing it's an indication that the Cubs brass may be thinking they're going to need him sooner than later as a starter and heading down to Iowa will give him a chance to start and work more innings. In the event that Rich Hill becomes Rick Ankiel without the steriod induced offensive capabilities and never throws a strike again and Jon Lieber continues to serve up gopher balls to the likes of Paul Bako and Jerry Hairston Jr. then we'll have Marshall ready to go. You can't always look surface deep IMO, because from a baseball sense this makes sense. Marshall is a talanted starter and shouldn't go to waste in the bullpen.
