duvalbulldog - I'm going to respond to your reply to my post one at a time. Concerning the Black, Teal and Gold, believe it or not, my son plays for the Black and Teal here in Altoona, PA. Go to www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=greenwoodmeadows to see the Greenwood Meadows baseball team in all of thier Black and Teal splendor. At the team picture he is the3rd one in from the left, first row. Check out "teams/rosters" and find the boy with the initials "NP" with the .667 batting average, making the Teal and Black proud! Also he is a poster on sportsline using the ID, "teal4ever20". Moving on.
I never heard of Vic Ketchem, sorry. But if he worked with or interviewed Knoll (the emperor), he's a keeper. You can't beat that kinda experience.
Concerning the Steeler's and Jag's playing each other, I miss playing you guy's twice a year! You boy's are the Steeler's of the south and I say that with the utmost respect. By imitating, copying and fashioning a fledgling football team after the Steeler's, what better compliment could a team ask for. The fact you guys stepped up to the plate so quickly, again a compliment to the Steeler way of playing football, say's it all. I beleive your first ever player (draft or compensatory pick) in 1995 was Tony Boselli. Picking a left tackle, gotta luv it! Coach Del Rio, I remember him playing linebacker at USC, again, like the Steeler's, pick a former player that has the potential to be a great coach.
How long have the Steeler's have been in existence? I believe the year, without looking it up (as a sign of respect to you and as a way of answering your challenge questions), was in the thirties, I'm guessing 1933-34 (one owner/family that whole time). Art Rooney was one of the founding father's of the NFL, an amatuer boxer and willing to take a chance on a very risky investment/league (which teams like the Jaguars should thank). Original team name was the Pirates (like the basball team), changed to the Steeler's (don't remember the year) and they have used that nickname all but for 1943 when the Steeler's and Eagle's combined to form the Steagle's do to WWll. They also did somethng with the Cardinals after that, but I can't recall it right this moment. As far as the "HERE WE GO STEELER'S, HERE WE GO!!!!" spontaneuos reaction during a game, I doubt anybody could pin point a day or time this became a part of the Steeler vocabulary. You just have to accept that this is one of the greatest sports chants in all of professional sports and we are glad that we have it as our battle/rally cry.
Concerning the weak fan base, have paitience. I've been a Steeler fan since 1969 (first year I remember rooting) and up until we won the first Super Bowl, we were the perenial loser's (how about it burgball). Point being, it takes time to build a fan base, championships help, but playing a particular type of football that a "fan base" can relate to goes a long way in the end.
As far as the bet/challenge goes, I'm not big into the avatar's you young guy's favor (yours) today, but I'll play. If your Jag's beat my Steeler's this year, I'll display a sexy woman of your choice for a week. If I win, you have to go old school football (see Myron Cope) avatar of my choice. Do we have a bet?
