B&S... Interesting stats!
It's hard to know exactly what the numbers actually MEAN ... but they ARE thought starters.
In ANY Era ... or even any Event ... some Top Players will play poorly (for whatever reason), some will get unlucky and splash a ball or two, some will be hung over, and some will play up to their standards.
In the old days, Top Players could play POORLY and still make the cut. Those days are long gone ... the Talent of Today's Fields are just two deep. Stub yer toe these days, and a dozen lesser players are gonna eat yer lunch and do ya doggie-style. In the old days, the beasts of The Tour would have to go into cardiac arrest on the course to miss a cut ... the Fields were just that shallow.
I ... I look at the leaderboard as a TREMENDOUS sign of the the INCREDIBLE TALENT in The Game today. There's NO ONE playing the weekend who doesn't DESERVE a weekend slot. In Jack's day, HALF of those making the cut wouldn't have made the Nationwide Tour. LOL ... Okay ... that's a BIT of an exaggeration, but not by much.
I LIKE what I'm seeing at Sawgrass. I LIKE the course setup ... and what I see as a GENUINE attempt to make the course BOTH Challenging and Fair. What I've seen so far THIS year at The Players is that it wants to be the 4th Major. I PREDICT that IF they continue on their present path, the PGA Championship will continue to LOSE RELEVANCE. The PGA is history ... gone ... done ...toast.
The PLAYERS is what The PGA SHOULD have been ... middle-ground between The Masters and the US Open. The Open (British) is, and always SHOULD be, The Anchor. If we abandon the TRADITION of The Game, then we lose The Game itself.
The PGA Championship is on it's way to becoming something on a par with the Tour Championship ... a good event ... but NOT a Majors calibre event.
Sawgrass is a STUNNING Golf Tournament.
But hey ... that's just MY opinion.
