although last year you thought the Bears were going to win the division,

I got a lot of doughnuts from Bears and Lions fans alike for saying the "Bears wouldn't win the division" during the 07 off-season.

I used the 2006 season because that was the year when they both started all the games. If you'd prefer to use the 2007 season, go right ahead.

Its the only way you can compare a bench warmer to someone whos still throwing the ball around so you can sleep better at night for your feel better medicine.

Yet everyone is so quick to say that Kitna is better than all three Chicago qbs

Thats odd, i've never seen "everyone" say anything about all three vs Kitna prior to me mentioning it.

Kitna being the 1 year further past his prime and having much less opportunities to throw for those kinds of stats since they're going to be looking to run the ball more.

A lot of QB's that left their mark on the NFL have played past their prime, most have retired around the age of 38 or better. Knowing the Lions are going to run the ball more is a fair assumption, theres no guarantee Kitna will throw for 250 or plus yards a game.

but I'm glad he had the guts to say the truth about Kitna.  Keep it up lionstop, don't think something is true just because others tell you its true.

Especially when a Bears fan comes on this board during the off season boasting about his team. I'm not making Kitna bigger or smaller than what he is. Nor am I the one that has a problem with me being a Lions fan, i'm sorry, it was a Kitna supporter.

i agree the Lions needed to address the Offensive Line...but there not going to do well if there rookie RB cant get the job done  ( or struggles his first year ) they'll need to rely on the Passing game and that will put ALOT of pressure on Kitna

and picked up a Backup RB from Denver ( Tatum Bell ) that i always seen as a "system type RB" and someone who wouldnt gain succes in Detroit  ( because there offensive line still has weak spots )

You started and finished with the answer for a running back to have success. Even Barry Sanders needed blockers, but he's the only running back I can think of thats done more with less.

( and he doesnt do well under pressure )

Not very many quarterbacks do. Tom Brady made the highlight reel from the Super Bowl mainly from being on his back side. It was hard to tell if that was Brady or Kitna.

Bears fans; Q. Why did Rex Grossman lose his job to Brian Geise last year? Was it a good move to bring him back?

Please, no sugar coatings or smart atss answers(Lions fans) I'm just trying to analyze the team, your honest answers are appreciated.

Grossman lost his job last year because he started the year playing like absolute horse cr@p and the assumption was that Greise could come in and at least be consistent and not throw the ball to the other team.  Once that didn't work out, it was musical chairs with the qb position the rest of the year.  Grossman has all the tools.  He has a great arm and throws one of the best deep passes in the league.  The problem with him is that when there is pressure (especially up the middle) the guy starts back peddling and often throws off his back foot or gets sacked 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage.  He also thinks he's still in college and that he can fit the ball in places where college cbs can't make plays on them...problem with that obviously is that the NFL cbs are just a little bit better than college cbs and can often make plays on passes that a qb was able to get away with in college.

If Grossman can get his head straight and play the position with some intelligence, he can be a good qb in this league.  Thats a big if in my mind.  My money is on Orton winning the competition in the pre-season and giving him a shot.  Orton works harder than Grossman and is definitely more intelligent.  He doesn't have the arm strength, but I think I would sacrifice that for a qb that knows when and when not to throw the ball.  After his rookie year, he really hasn't been given much of a chance.  People scoff at the re-signing of Grossman, but even if he doesn't work out as a starter, he's not be worst back-up qb in the league if Orton goes down to injury.  My whole theory about the Bears is that they are the type of team that has a defense and special team and needs to just have an average offense that DOES NOT TURN THE BALL OVER and can control the ball and keep the defense fresh.  This team (I think) is perfect for a 17-13 game and the best qb for that type of ball control offense is Orton.  The biggest misconception from last year was that the qbs failed this team.  What was the big problem was the offensive line and the fact that we could not run the ball and sustain long drives.  Our defense stayed on the field way too long a wore down.  The Bears need to with the TOP each game and they have a chance to be good.

Bottom line is that you cant take a Qb from Florida and throw him in a Chicago Bears system. The two dont mesh. It was a solid choice to bring him back in my opinion, hes better than anyone they have, but he still doesnt have anyone to throw to .

I believe Grossman is a better quarterback than Orton. I'll bet the Bears fans believe it too, deep down. The reason I say "deep down" is because their reluctant to say anything. Orton's rookie season was full of mistakes until the coaching staff wanted Orton to let the running game and defense win their games.

Grossman was Benched because all those mechanichs he was supposed to be working on in the offseason... well... they didn't happen. He still back peddled, he still couldn't step up into the pocket. He still held his wrists half a foot apart when taking snaps(whichresults in fumbles). And above all else, he -still- was throwing horrible throws.

I do not think it was a good idea to bring him back. I was rather disgusted at that choice.

I think Orton wins because he has a better head for the game. I mean, David Carr can make all the throws possible, but look what it does him. Grossman is the same as Carr. Plus, Orton can see over the linemen.

Orton may win the job because of better pocket presence , headier play, and more respect in that crazy locker room. Fair?

I think that pretty much sums it up.  Grossman throws a great deep ball, which is sexy, but his shortcomings (and I do mean short - listed at 6' which is at least two inches taller than he really is) have outweighed his assets.  Orton did make some mistakes in his rookie season - but he was a rookie.  At the end of last year Orton showed his game is minimal mistakes and hit  the short, intermediate passes, which the revamped WR/TE corp should be suited for.  Plus, he'll put the off-field time in.

Crackhead Benson is a waste of space.    Maybe you should stay away from Austen Tx, Genius.

Still I applaud the Bears for  wasting no time in dumping him. Kudos and well done.

Nother point,

This is probably about as fair and objective a post as I;ve seen.

You are right on when you say that this could easilly be a 10 win team or lose 10 games as well. It all depends on 10 things in my opinion which are:

1. Brian Urlacher's neck doesn't bother him

2. The oline can actually block and pass protect.

3. Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton steps up.

4. Matt Forte is at least 3/4 of the running back Thomas Jones was.

5. Mike Brown can stay healthy or barring that Craig Steltz can adequately take over.

6. Dusty Dvoracek can stay healthy or barring that Marcus Harrison can contribute right away.

7. Ron Turner opens up the play book.

8. Devin Hester can progress a little at WR.

9. Chris Williams can be better than Fred Miller.

10. Marty Booker, Brandon Lloyd, Mark Bradley, Rashied Davis, Marcus Monk, and Earl Bennett can all be decent, not great, WRs.

That's a lot to ask for. I can see everything most working out, but would be interested to see how 3, 4, 5, 6,  and 7 work out this year.

As far as the Olin Kreutz goes, I agree. He is getting old really quick. I really wanted to see the Bears draft Steve Justice to start grooming as a replacement.

John Tait should still be solid, and drafting Kirk Barton will be beneficial since he will be groomed to take over for him in a year or two.

Adewale Ogunleye is getting up there in years but we do have sufficient depth at the DE position where it shouldn't be too much of a factor.

Only time will tell with Brian Urlacher.

As far as Desmond Clark goes, I think you're going to see Greg Olsen take more and more of the snaps as the season progresses.

Again thi could be a 10 win team or it could be a 4 win team. It all depends on how the questions above get answered.

Pretty good there jigghadu.   Thats alot to have to count on, but there are some very grizzled veterans on the roster. Those type of guys have a lot of pride and wont quit.

On my original post, that you were referring to -  I wrote and  I had a hunch that they would cut Cedric Benson before training camp. Good move.    It sucks to see such a high pick  become a bust, believe me.   Can the incredible Devin Hester throw the pill too?
