I don't think his number should b retired. He had 2-3 good seasons with Rangers but not good enough to have a number retired

He won the Stanley Cup for us...he was a leader off the ice and on it...the dude deserves it. He's probably not Messier, Leetch, Gilbert...but he was a very good player...one of the better Blueshirts.

10 Seasons as a Ranger, 280 Goals, King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner for leadership during the Stanley Cup year, Bill Masterton Trophy for sportsmanship in his final year with the Rangers shows how classy of a guy he is.  He was a multiple award winner of in house and media awards as well.

8 seasons above 20 goals
4 seasons above 30 goals
1 season above 50 goals

He had (now tied with Jagr) the record for most goals ever scored in a single season by any Ranger player.  He was a fan favorite (including my favorite Ranger ever - was just before the time of the cup that I started watching as a kid).

Finally, he never left the Rangers, during the offseason of '01, he was traded to San Jose for younger talent.  Although the trade ended up a bust for NY, you can't pin that on Graves.  Even now, I believe he is still with the Rangers in some capacity.  I know my cousin met him during one of the games in the Rangers personal box.

Plust - 54 years with a cup.  Every star on that team needs to be hailed as a savior.  Graves was fantastic and I'm stoked for him!

But unless they played in the 30's-40, they didn't win any cups...  Gravey did

Graves has always been a leader of the Rangers and represented us. How can you retire 3 of the 4 main parts oif the 94 team and not retire the jersey of the leading scorer of that team. Graves deserves it in every way.

rangers1499, i could not disagree with you more.  retiring numbers is an awesome tradition that allows teams to recognize and honor the players in their history who made outstanding contributions to the sport and their organization.  adam graves was not only a fan favorite, but a humanitarian as well. he was recognized league-wide for his dedication to charity.  players, coaches, fans, and even non-hockey fans in the community loved him because he was a role model.  don't get me wrong, i don't think his number should be retired because he is charitable.  i just think it added to the reasoning of why the franchise wants his name to be synonymous with the team's history.  if you need a reminder of just how impressive his career was, check the facts: http://rangers.nhl.com/team/app?page=HistoricalPlayerDetail&pkey=8447364&service=page

Rangers--

Your lack of Ranger history is appaling--Graves finished third all time in goals in Ranger history. In fact, he's 10th all time in scoring in team history.

But the more staggering thing is that you, like so many fans, refuse to look past on-ice accomplishments when determining a players' value to the organization

Players` Player Award 1991-92, 1992-93, 1994-95, 1998-99

Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award — 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1998-99, 1999-00

Rangers Fan Club Ceil Saidel Award (Dedication) — 1994-95 (inaugural winner), 1995-96 (co-winner), 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01

"1993 was a good year for Graves, as he was also awarded the "Crumb Bum Award" given annually for services to New York youngsters as voted on by the media"

"He was recognized by the NHL with its King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 1994, presented annually to the NHL player "who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made noteworthy humanitarian contributions to his community"

In 2000, Graves was honored with the NHL Player Foundation award, "recognizing the NHL player who applies the core values of hockey - -commitment, perseverance and teamwork — to enrich the lives of people in his community.”

The Professional Hockey Writer`s Association awarded Graves the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2001 as the "NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey."

Graves has been recognized with honors from countless organizations and publications for his achievements in the community, including USA Weekend`s "Most Caring Athlete" Award, and The Sporting News` "Good Guy" Award an award was given to charitable and community service efforts

He returned to the Rangers organization in the summer of 2005 as Special Assistant, Prospect Development and Community Relations. In this role, he assists in the Blueshirts` many community outreach and fan development programs

In summation, Adam Graves' contributions to the Rangers organization and the NHL cannot simply be measured in his 280 goals. He's a community leader who is passionate about helping and enriching the lives of others around him. If you don't want a player like that to have his number retired, you're missing the larger picture

The whole NHL doesn't have to know. He's getting his number retired by the Rangers, not inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Again, this is about respecting the contributions a player made to an organazation and a community. It's sad that you only recongnize contributions made on the score sheet.

And, since you like making factually incorrect statments, you should know that the NHL does recognize the Clancy and Masterson trophies being that they're the ones who award it.

USA Weekend? That's put out by USA TODAY, which is only one o the most read daily national newspaper in the country.

The Professional Hockey Writers association? Yeah, the NHL probably has never heard of them either.

The NHL Players Foundation? Yeah, that's probably not an NHL-wide organizations.

Boy, those are some obscure organizations. The NHL, the professional writers who cover it, the players who play it, and one of the most well read newspapers in the USA.

It'd be nice if one day fans put down their XBox controllers and paid a little more attention to things not shown in a box score.

But I suppose these numbers mean nothing to you

1993- Second on team in goals

1994- Led team in goals

1995- Led team in goals

1997- Second on team in goals

1998- Led team in goals (Tied)

1999- Led team in goals

280 career goals, third in team history.

All i have to say is if you didn't know who Graves was before you started this thread and didn't think he deserves his number retired...thats fine....you didn't know. But after all this backing of Graves....all the stats...all the honors.....all the charitable things he does....If you still now don't think Graves should have his number retired, i'm sorry my friend, but you are clueless.

On a personal note, I have had the honor of meeting Graves a few times and i must say that despite all his accomplishments, awards, etc. He is the most humble, appreciative sports figure i have ever met. Throw out the stats, what Graves has done and continues to do for the Rangers is reason enough for them to bestow their greatest honor on him. He IS a Ranger!
