It's just a possibility right now but I'd like to know. Does anyone think this is a good idea for the Leafs? He didn't really do too much for Vancouver in my opinion. Yea he brought Luongo there but that wasn't a good move by him, that was a dumb move by the Florida GM. I saw that they may have hopes of reuniting him and Burke the season after but it's still just a chance. I dunno, but I hope they talk to a few more people before they go signing any papers on this one. Any thoughts?
Ok well first i havn't payed much attention to Florida or Vancouver the last couple years... But if they end up taking him as GM then is he gonna release Luongo again? Or what?
Nonis was on the right track he kept his youth instead of trading the promising talent for a rental player and a chance to win maybe one round. He knew his team wasnt good enough to make the finals. He inhierted a team with huge contracts and little promise on the farm hmm sounds like the Leafs IMO he was shafted. When Bill Walsh was hired he would not sign unless they gave him 5 years. Nonis only had 3 years but 2 years from now if he wasnt let go and this team would contend

Also, if you recall, he won the 'Brunnstrom sweepstakes' before being fired which killed the deal, just another would be young talent on the up swing.
I have a feeling that they want to use him on route to Burke, offering him something just short of the GM position... or maybe GM but not president which they save in case they can lure Burke later.
With that said, Nonis on his own would be leaps and bounds above the managing that the Leafs have had in the last few decades (minus a few steals that Fletcher pulled), I just don't know if the media would allow them to get away with a "non-proven winner".
I guess he wouldn't be that bad of a GM, but I think methical's right with the media not wanting a "non-proven winner". Either way, I hope they get a guy that knows what he's doing and can change this team around. I don't think it needs major adjusting though. A few trades here and there and a good choice in a coach, and they should be in the playoffs next year. I hope anyways, 4 years in a row would be suicidal LOL.
The native of the Vancouver suburb of Burnaby, B.C., Nonis attended Parkerest Elementary and Burnaby North High School, and played minor and junior hockey for the Burnaby Bluehawks.
Nonis served six seasons as Senior Vice President, Director of Hockey Operations, where he was the club's cheif negotiator of player contracts and was responsible for Vancouver's minor league affiliate agreement with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. He also directed all areas of the Hockey Operations Department.
Over the past seven seasons, Dave has led the negotiation of a number of long-term agreements with many of Vancouver's core players and was intrumental in forecasting the team's budget and payroll which helped to re-stabilize the NHL club's economic and long-term viability in Vancouver.
Prior to joining the Canucks as Senior Vice-President, Director of Hockey Operations in 1998, Nonis served as the National Hockey League's Manager of Hockey Operations for four seasons. In his role, Nonis gained a vast knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and helped finalize sections of the document when the latest edition was drafted during the 1994-95 season. He also worked with the league's arbitration team, which included helping teams prepare for arbitration, researching salaries and interpreting contract language.
Nonis originally broke into the NHL with the Canucks in 1990. In his first years with the team he was primarily responsible for corporate contracts, computer scouting and team services.
Nonis played for the Burnaby Bluehawks of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League from 1982 to 1984. He then played for the University of Maine where he served as captain for two seasons, leading his team to back-to-back NCAA championship tournaments and graduated with a B.A. in 1988. Nonis played one season professionally in Denmark, then returned to Maine in 1989 to serve as Graduate Assistant under Head Coach Shawn Walsh. Nonis earned an MBA from the University of Maine in 1990.
Good to know. Thanks for the info alfred. Seems like he has some years under his belt with the league, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what he can do. If he gets the job that is. I wouldn't mind them hiring Mike Milbury from the TSN panel, that guys a riot LOL, and I like his thoughts on the Leafs. Although he didn't seem to be very successful for the Islanders. Decisions, decisions...too bad it's not mine lol. Fun to guess though.
