Last season (if my memory serves), the Chiefs roster had an average age of just over 30.

Taking a look at the roster a few days ago, and prior to undrafted free agent signings - which only makes the roster younger - the 70 players had an average age of 25.6.  In fact, there are only 9 players who are 30 years of age or older remaining on the roster - and that includes the 33 year-old long-snapper Darche; with four on offense and four on defense:  Damion McIntosh (31), Brian Waters (31), Tony Gonzalez (32), Damon Huard (35), Alfonso Boone (32), Donnie Edwards (35), Patrick Surtain (32), Greg Wesley (30).  Two of those - Huard and Wesley - are at this time not considered starters, with the potential that two more - Edwards and Surtain - may not retain their starter status.

For those still concerned about the offensive line, I would remind them that it was pretty old last season, with an average age of 31.4:  McIntosh (30), Waters (30), Weigmann (34), Welbourn (31), Terry/Turley (32/32).

Notice that McIntosh and Waters were the youngest starting linemen last year at 30.  This year, those two will be the oldest along the line.  And even with both being a year older, the line will be at least 20 years younger in total, or 4 years younger per player, on average:  McIntosh (31), Waters (31), Niswanger (25), Albert (23), ??  The fifth lineman will be no older than 27, as that is the age of the oldest linemen on the roster after McIntosh and Waters and includes Wade Smith, Anthony Alabi, and Adrian Jones.  That would give our starting offensive line an average age of 27.4.  However, if Herb Taylor (24) or Barry Richardson (22), would earn the fifth spot, The average age would drop to 26.8 or 26.4, respectively.  In the least, the additional strength and quickness from this youth infusion should be better than what was had with a line that averaged over 31 years of age last season.

Good post head.  You put alot of work into it.  Like you, I'm still a little worried about the O-line, but we have some unknowns there.  We know very little about Alabi, Herb Taylor could be better than we think, with another year under his belt, and Richardson may be a diamond in the rough.  It still won't be the best line in the league, but it can't be worse.  I also think the playcalling will only help the line, as we were so predictable last year, defenses were able to set their formations, pretty well knowing what we were going to do, giving them a definite edge over our offensive line.

head,.......very interesting and once again, informative. i like it. the youth will serve us for years to come. also think the playcalling will only help the line, as we were so predictable last year

i agree racy, and you got me to thinking. what are the chances that chan will try to install a sorta spread offense, or some type of hybrid offense, to take advantage of the o-line, AND  Brodie's strong arm and quick release. that may help with the maturation process of both, while at the same time, taking the pressure off. with Charles and Johnson in the same backfield, it will keep the d-line of the opposition off balance also.

jus sayin'........

iho....

I know Chan ran a spread offense in college.  I can see him using LJ and Charles at once, kind of how the Saints use Bush and McCallister, maybe even put Charles in a slot formation.  Even if one is only a decoy to confuse the defense.  Herm said he would stay away from the offensive playcalling, and I hope he does.  He can be too conservative.  One concern about running a spread offense is, do we have enough good receivers to do it?  I guess we will find out.

I think that we need to see the roster once it gets cut down,  but Herm has already brought in younger guys who are STARTING on the team. I expect the same from this years drafts. Anyone notice that this is the first draft since 1984 the Chiefs got 2 1st round picks and that year they got John Alt (Tackle)  and Bill Maas (NoseTackle).

Well I never really saw him in college. So the fact that you follow him after college gives me hope that he can improve from last years performance. Clearly he needs a better Offensive Line and running game to do that.
