Lance Berkman.  Berkman is 1st in the majors in runs (42),  2nd in hits (55), 1st in doubles (16), 1st in homers (13), 2nd in RBI (38), 2nd in batting average (.393), 2nd in OBP (.470), 1st  in slugging (.800), and 1st in OPS (1.270).  He's even swiped 6 bases, which isn't bad at this point in the season.  He's having the kind of start that Derrek Lee had during his 2005 campaign.  I know I'm biased because I'm an Astro fan, but I'd love to see an argument for a player that's playing better this year.

I would think that Chase Utley would be close enough to remove the "hands down" portion of your post.

13 h.r / 28 r.b.i / .327 b.a / .409 o.b.p  / .680 slug / 31 runs / 49 hits / 12 doubles.

His numbers, while not as good, do compare favorably.  Once you factor in that he plays a much tougher and more impact position of 2b VS. 1B for Berkman, IMO, this is a close race.

When I read the title of this thread I clicked on it with the intentions of posting my argument for Lance Berkman, but since you did such a great job presenting it for me I will just simply say...........I agree!

What about Chipper Jones? This is more along the lines of BigD's post, arguing the "hands down" portion more than the actual post.

12 HR/ 30 RBI, .406 BA/  .465 OBP/  .681 SLG/  26 runs/ 56 hits/  8 doubles.

I would think that these numbers would at least be a tie to Berkman's.  .465 OBP?

He certainly is tearing the cover off the ball right now.  But, I will disagree and go with Cliff Lee.  As the adage goes, good pitching will beat good hitting.  But if it is strictly from an offensive standpoint than Lance Berkman is a very good choice.

To clear up any misunderstanding, I don't really dissagree with the initial post, I just think "hands down" is a big overstatement.

Cliff Lee's numbers so far.  6-0, 0.67 ERA, 53.2 innings, 44 K's and only 4 walks.  He would be 7-0 if the Indians could have scored just one run last night.  9 shutout innings and no decision.  The guy is on fire right now.
