The following was originally posted by burghguy and I thought it was a good time to resurrect it. The original had a final tally of 66% to 34%...

It seems like the Penguins may only realistically be able to resign one of these two solid players.  With that in mind, I pose the question " Who would you sign Marian Hossa or Ryan Malone?"

While an interesting case can be made either way, I am going to have to give my vote to Malone, and here's why.  Malone showed this year he is a top six forward who can do some dirty work (clogging the front of the net) and he can score some too, after all he did post a career high point total in '08.  Another more logical reason is that he will most certainly be cheaper than Hossa, which would allow the Pens to go after proven goal scorers in free agency who would cost less than Hossa.

Please vote and post a reason why you voted as you did.

I voted for Hossa. All you have to do is look at the playoff results and i think it's obvious that not only is Hossa more skilled offensively but he's a beast on defense! Nothing against Malone. I love the guy and think he'll have a long and prosperous career in Pgh. But if I had to choose... well hopefully the pens won't have to!

I voted for Marian Hossa because I think he is one of the best 2 way players in the league and those type of players are very hard to come by. Ryan Malone is a good player in his own right, but not as talented as Hossa and we have plenty of dirty work guys to handle his departure. Hopefully the added funds from making it to the Stanley Cup can allow us to keep both of them.

My thoughts exactly Paxsteelerfan.  Personally, I was geeked when I found out that Malone was a Pittsburgh native and would hate to lose him but if he commands a salary anywhere in the neighborhood of Hossa money Id have to say bye bye Ryan. I guess another question would be how much more would you pay for Hossa?

I like to add that I don't think the Pens management (Schero?) would give up all they did for a temporary player. I hope they talked (I don't know if that's legal) to Hossa before making the deal.

Not really a fair analogy.  I think anyone would sign Hossa over Malone straight up.  But you can sign two Malones for one Hossa.  A real question would be ... do you want to sign Hossa or do you want to sign Malone, Orpik, and Ruutu?

Malone is staying. He's the homegrown player who got us to the playoffs.
Hossa will stay too. He's 'one' on the team, for the Pens victories in the playoffs.

The Stanley Cup is coming back to Pittsburgh.

Go Pens!!

I voted Malone. There's a reason why he carries that John LeClair figure around with him. He has become a force in front of the net putting away "garbage." I realize the value of Hossa as well. I mean, look at what he's doing in this playoff run and his backchecking is outstanding, but I feel Malone is a guy who has been underestimated in the past. There was a post early this season where people were saying that Malone was unneccessary weight and should be traded for defensive help. I think he has silenced many critics with his play this year and truly established himself as a key player on this team. While I do hope the Pens find a way to keep both players, I tend to agree with a previous post that keeping multiple key players (Malone, Orpik, Ruutu, etc.) is far more beneficial to the team as a complete unit.

Ideally i'd wait til the season is over to decide that, but based on what i've seen the last 3 rds of the playoffs to me it's a no brainer,Hossa has turned into the stud we had hoped we could get at the trade deadline, that 2nd goal in game 3 was one Ovechkin would make and frankly before he scored the 4th goal in game3,Malone has been kinda quiet lately, but you have to weigh what he has done for the whole season, bottom line is these are great problems that we have, sure beats wondering what city the team will be playing in next year or wondering about making payroll
