WASHINGTON (AP)—Sen. Arlen Specter wants an independent investigation of the Patriots’ taping of opposing coaches’ signals similar to the Mitchell Report on performance enhancing drugs in baseball.
Specter again criticized the league’s handling of the investigation and threatened the possibility of revoking the NFL’s antitrust exemption during a news conference Wednesday. The senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee met with former New England video assistant Matt Walsh a day earlier.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell indicated he considered the investigation over after meeting with Walsh on Tuesday.
“Everybody pooh-poohs it,” Specter said. “It’s ridiculous to make that kind of contention.”
Specter, from Pennsylvania, cited the fact a Patriots attorney sat in on Walsh’s meeting with Goodell as proof the investigation has not been impartial.
He repeated his disapproval of Goodell’s decision to destroy the notes and tapes confiscated during the initial investigation last fall.
“That sequence is incomprehensible,” Specter said. “It’s an insult to the intelligence of the people who follow it.”
If the NFL condones cheating, Specter said, it encourages others to cheat.
“They owe the public a lot more candor and a lot more credibility,” he said.

Shouldn't a senator have more important things to investigate rather than the rules of the NFL, how about investigating a way to bring down gas prices, or investigate ways toi improve the economy. Im sick of this guy constantly complaining. It is a game now please focus on politics rather than football.

I would love for a 3rd party to get involved. I have said from the beginning and will always say that I would like to get all the information and all the facts straight. If there's nothing less to be found, then nothing else will come form it. I will say though, if they're going to have a 3rd party investigator, then they should look into the rest of the NFL and see if this has been a wide spread practice. (I Highly doubt Belichick was the first and only coach to practice this).

This is so laughable.
I'd be embarrassed as hell if he were my Senator. With our soldiers dying in Iraq, Bush in office these last 8 years, gas at $4.00 a gallon. Here is a man with an agenda that is very disturbing and a waste of the tax payers money.
Just like that jackass Senator Burton from Indiana at the Clemens hearing, can you imagine he has been an elected official for decades. They should of investigated how he won those elections.

I can tell you how to improve the economy, but you're not going to like it. It's called raising takes, our economy would become much better for it. We have pretty low tax rates as it is compared to the rest of the world, and we are in the middle of a $400 billion war.

I think if they are going to get a 3rd party involved it should someone other then a Senator who's favorite team was beaten in a Super Bowl by the team in question...that seems fishy to me...

Spector needs to focus on the problems in this country. That is why those stupid voters voted for him. We are a country at war, have an energy crisis, in a recession, and he is worried about the PATS filming his Eagles. This guy is a moron. If the people of Pennsylvania vote for him, they deserve him. What goes on in the NFL, and has been thoroughly investigated, punishment handed out and admissions of wrongdoing, has nothing to do with this idiot. Walsh had pictures of the Charger's cheerleaders. Start doing your job Spector. And I'm not a Pats fan, I'm a Chief's fan, but this has gotten out of hand. You Pat's haters can bash me all you want, but that is my opinion, which I am entitled too. My only concern about the Pats, is we play them the first game of the season, and they are going to be pissed for losing the Superbowl. I just hope we can stay somewhat competitive.

I'm a JAGS fan and I think this is an absolute joke that the worst fine and penalty in NFL history is not enough for these sore losers, what is the excuse of the NFC teams who lost to the Pats and they weren't videotaped. What about all the teams who lost to them this year when they were more closely watched than Charles Manson.
Matt Walsh pulled a fast one on everyone by getting full immunity to turn over stolen property including what I heard was memorabilia, good for him.

And people wonder why the USA is in a recession...because the damn politicians are too busy watching sports and following THEIR meeger problems and not paying attention to the country and it's people. In the grand scheme...this is a MINOR issue. How about explaining things to us why a gallon of milk is now close to 4 dollars? Or why gas prices continue to get higher..yet minimum wage doesn't? Why are their AMERICANS who are starving in our streets? Arlen.....oh Arlen...just stick to what you know...and don't throw stones considering your glass house.

This has to be the stupidest thing i've heard of. I do believe that Goodell pretty much is trying to close it out & he probably realizes he came down way to easy on the Patriots the 1st time around but for a senator to be involved in this when punishment has allready been given is just plain dumb. Believe me i'm no fan of the Patriots & would love nothing more then to see Belichek get punished the same way a player gets when they violate league rules (suspension) but please Senator try finding something a little more important to spend our tax dollars on!!!

The Senator said Goodell was caught in an "apparent conflict of interest" because the NFL doesn't want the public to lose confidence in the league's integrity. Gee kinda of like a certain Senator who has two organizations that contibute heavely to him when he runs for office ( not to mention any named, but The Owner of the Philadelphia Eagles and comcast). Hey Pot you know who is calling.....

pinkack, suspend him along with the 3/4 million dollar fines and the loss of a 1st round pick isn't enough. Ask any other NFL team what the value of a 1st round pick is and you will find its value is worth millions so this is a harder hit than you may think. They have been punished, Matt Walsh had nothing and Arlen Specter total conflict of interest doesn't deserve another word (he's an embarrassment to Pennsylvania).
