why the fans were booing is he is because edmonds is a long time cardinal , coupled with the fact that he strikes out more than he blinks. The team we have is patient at the plate ,with fukudomes joining. we lose pei 's speed and he looked like he was turning it around at the plate.

I think most of the booing for Edmonds was a result of most Cubs fans not agreeing with picking him up. I interpret those boos, like the boos for JJ, as boos for Hendry for a signing they don't like.

That being said, the fist shaking about booing is getting tiresome. Swerski make a good point about the difference between Cubs fans and Wrigley Field tourists, which I think is huge. But they get lumped together, and Cubs fans end up getting criticised for being one of two things:

  1. Cubs fans don't care whether the Cubs win or lose. After all, they come to Wrigley Field in droves no matter what because they are only there for the beer and the sunshine. The game is a secondary event.
  2. Cubs fans care too much whether the Cubs win or lose. It's as if their lived depended on it. They are wound too tight, have too high of expectations, and boo to easily.

I am more weary of that than I am the booing.

I too am getting really tired of the boos, tired of all the unnecessary throwing guys under the bus simply because they had 1 bad day. If I have to hear one more time about how Jim Edmonds used to be a Cardinal I'm going to throw up. News flash, Jim Edmonds is a CUB! He's a Cub because he wants to beat the Cardinals, just like the rest of you idiots who claim you don't want him on the team. I think the standing ovation followed by boos a few innings later is a prime example of how hypocritical Cubs fans have gotten. We may as well become either Mets or Yankees fans or move to Philly if we're going to act like that. Seriously, we're going to lose over 60 games this year and NOBODY on the team is going to bat .400, nor is anyone going to steal 50 bases or hit 75 home runs nor drive in 200 runs or have an ERA under 0.50 or convert 100% of his save chances or win every single time he goes to the mound, so deal with it.

Well, maybe it is time to take-back Wrigley from the imposters. Like the Idiot that started the wave 2 or 3 years ago, he should still be in traction (just kidding but you get the point). Like the people out in the bleachers that throw stuff on the field, they need to be confronted. Confronted by the real Bleacher Bums that have going to Wrigley before it was fashionable.

These people need to be called-out and embarrased by fans that find this behavior unacceptable. It's difficult to reason with a drunk but it has to be done.

Seems to me like Edmonds understands the cheers and the Boo's.

His point was that a pitcher can't come into a game where it isn't a save situation and then give up runs to make it a save situation for himself.  It COULD be a save situation for the next pitcher.

So it is a fact, that a pitcher can't pitch himself into a save situation.  He can pitch his team into a save situation if another pitcher relieves him.

On the other stuff, you both a right in differnt ways.  He's right in the fact that all that matters is that the team wins.  You are right in saying that stats matter - because -not withstanding the monetary aspect of it - stats are an indicator of how a player will perform in the future, so analysis of those dtats can help your team perform better and ultimately get to the point of winning the game(s) - which is the ultimate goal.

It still doesn't change the fact that booing your own player is counterproductive and thus is a dumb thing for a fan to do.

I think the point about the booing coming from people in the stands at Wrigley Field and not true Cub fans is a valid point. Games have become a place to drink beer and talk on cellphones. Case in point - I went to a couple of games last year and in both instances I had to pretty much explain to those around me what was going on in terms of players, moves, who was playing well/slumping etc. And I live in Florida!

I guarantee you 3/4 of those booing probably didnt know who they were booing and why. In a sense, that makes it even worse.

I have the misfortune of living in Philthadelphia (I moved here for one reason or another...) home the the absolute worst fans in all of sports.  I was at the infamous J.D. Drew battery game (sporting my FSU jersey & cheering him on!). Hearing & seeing some of what is happening at Wrigley is very disappointing.  Since I was a kid at my first games back in the early eighties we rode visiting players & threw back baseballs, etc.  That was the passion of Cubs fans & some of the aura of Wrigley.  This though has really irked me because we have become no better than the Philly clowns.... ugh

I would love for us to get back to the class of the league.  Problem is I think most of those passionate & educated fans are now the ones that take over the stands when the Cubs are on the road.  I was in Phoenix recently and my friends were telling me it is like a home game for the Cubs b/c the place is entirely blue in the stands.  That is kinda awesome!  I think all we can do is ignore it & turn a cheek.  It is not difficult to reason with a drunk, it is IMPOSSIBLE! (I was a bouncer for about a dozen years as well)
