Thanks BD, I figured the smiley and cajunica reference would be enough hint in the direction I was headed, but I was wrong. Won't be the last time....

BD --
Why is it that you can make a statement citing a long period of time and someone who wants to challenge it is accused of bringing up a Red Herring?

1.  Find where I said anything about it being impossible to go through the Pac 10 undefeated.  I was referring to what SEC fans say about why the SEC is so tough... it is almost impossible to go undefeated in that conference.  I showed that in the last 30 years almost half of the champions went undefeated.    Why not call out your own brethren on this ridiculous claim?

2.  You provided the info and I decided?  So, when I disagree or show different views... what does this mean to you?  I am told I know zilch or nada about CFB.

3.  I showed you tons of evidence about people comparing teams from different time periods and you still think that I am the only one that does this.  I even showed you examples of comparing common opponents.  Incredible.  There are no absolutes in this conversation.  I get that.  However, I think I have presented much more compelling evidence than any LSU fan for this argument.

4.  I am still waiting to hear you definition of tradition in CFB.

5.  Your insights on CFB are great and more importantly, the fact that you serve our country... I am compelled to tell you Thank You.

Getting back to LSU vs USC...
1.  All teams have football tradition.  However you want to define it.  I think when people think of the lore of CFB and the teams that stick out in their mind as having a lasting legacy to this point in CFB, I just do not see LSU in that conversation. Maybe you and Cajunica do... I do not.  Maybe in ten or twenty years.

2.  I think LSU has been incredible this past BCS years.  No doubt.  Unfortunately for LSU, their 2003 BCS was tainted by the stupid system itself.  They should have played USC at the least not a conference runner up.   It is the most contested or controversial BCS game to this point.  Because of that derision, I am not apt to look at that BCS and feel satisfied with that outcome for either team.  Not LSUs fault, but surely you can see that this does not exactly put LSU on a pedestal.  Even this past year... people pined that a number of teams could have beat OSU this year.   Once again... not LSUs fault.  I think you would find it hard for people to show how lucky the 2004 Trojans were or even the 2005 version who still go down as one of the best college football teams without even winning the BCS championship.  You can make that argument for Auburn for 2004, but the AP would disagree with you.

LSU is great... I just think USC is greater.  And it is all good if SEC fans disagree.  No worries here.  That is what makes things fun.

Peace out.    See you in Tempe.

rcooke,

I really do luv you or I would not have put you in my favs...but you are as stubborn as I am.

Instead of me defining tradition in College Football, go over to my spontaneous outburst on the thread about difficult stadiums.  Look at my post around 1200 hours today.  Howlongsitbeen started the thread and I got carried away with emotion.  My post doesn't exactly address your question, but look at it and we can pick it up from there.

For me, no sport other than baseball has a tradition like CFB in the USA.  So look at it and then lets discuss.  I promise to reduce my emotion level.....at least for a while.

Frankly, you can take your USC tradition and place it where the sun don't shine. So much of that tradition is the hype and gah-gah of marketing that you find in large media centers like L.A. It's the same engine that fuels all those Heisman winners.

Not to say that USC hasn't had great teams or players in the past. It has, but really ... "Tailback U" ... jeez take a friggin' pill !!!

In 1979, an average LSU ballclub that would end up 7-5 on the year AFTER winning the Tangerine Bowl hosted the almighty USC Trojans, student body right and all (LOL), led them 9-3 at half and lost 17-12 only when USC scored a TD with 32 seconds left (happened right in front of me in the South Endzone too).

LSU outplayed this team that was being called a contender for the "greatest college football team ever" (how many times have we heard that line?). This team that would end up with another Heisman (CWhite ... LOL), beaucoup AA's, 12 future NFL 1st round picks, an 11-0-1 record (tied Stanford ... another LOL), and a share of the NC (with Bama ... LMAO). Even the Baton Rouge evening paper ran full-page pre-game stories with pics and graphics on student body right blah blah blah ... jeez !!!

LSU played most of the game with its 3rd string RB due to injuries, and USC's final drive was aided by an infamous face-mask penalty (by a Pac10 ref) on an LSU D lineman on 3rd and 9 at USC's 36. Some team of the century, but indicative of the hype ... err, "tradition" eminating from South Central L.A.

And in '84, LSU repaid the debt 23-3 in the Coliseum. To use rcooke's numericalizingness procedure, that's LSU 35, USC 20 over the two games. LOL

TRADITION THIS ... !!! You'd think that football was invented in L.A.
