I think it's impairative to sign Jarkko Ruutu because 1. he's an aggravator 2. he's a great role player 3. We risk him going to another atlantic or eastern team and I don't want to play him 4 or 8 times a year. Dupuis is another one, great PK man.

Dude no offense but have you seen the list of free agents? I put Malone on top, then Hossa (we gave up to much to see his talent leave at the end of the year). We also need a long term deal for Malkin and Fluery. After that I'd look to Orpik, Dupuis, and Ruutu in that order.
Both the guys you mentioned have an important role with the team, but there are far more pressing needs. These guys won't be to expensive and with the salary cap that will have to ultimately factor in on who they can and can't sign.
This is all well and good but we should focus on the playoffs and worry about this stuff after the Penguins win the Stanley Cup.

I'm with ya steelers=sb. Ruutu will be a VERY important signing. Dupuis as well.
Here is a list of all the Pens and their contracts:

I guess we'll just have to see what they decide to do, who they decide to go with. We have cap space (and they said they are going to spend) and Hossa has said that he likes Pittsburgh.

Nice link man, Thanks!
Looks like the Penguins have this one in the bag (only saying this because it's a home game, in Philly I would be a little cautious yet).

Lookin over the list from that link, I counted twelve Penguins free agents to be this summer. Here's my two cents as to what'll happen to them:
- Ryan Malone -- Will be resigned, showed his value this year.
- Marian Hossa -- This is a toss up, if the Penguins win the Cup, will he stay?
- Georges Laraque -- What does Laraque really do? He looks so uncomfortable on the ice. Hopefully we'll let him walk.
- Jarkko Ruutu -- Solid player, I would love to see him resigned.
- Adam Hall -- Resign him, he is a great role player.
- Kris Beech -- Hasn't played enough to warrant resigning him.
- Jeff Taffe -- Played minimally this year, let him walk.
- Pascal Dupuis -- Resign him, he has been just as valuable as Hossa since the trade.
- Mark Eaton -- Pens showed they can win without him. He'll walk.
- Brooks Orpik -- Must be resigned, he is the Pens only real physical defenseman.
- Gary Roberts -- Roberts should retire.
- Ty Conklin -- Should be resigned, showed how great of a backup he is when Marc Andre Fleury was out,

Well like I said above, that is my front seven. I agree on Chris Beech, Jeff Taffe, Adam Hall, and Ty Conklin. I think Gary Roberts still has good 3rd line skills and he and Laraque are needed for times when a message needs to be sent. Teams will always take liberties at your Stars. These guys can help keep that to a minimum during the reg season. I know Laraque hasn't done much in the playoffs, but it's the way it has to be. Maybe game 4 he could've been unleashed, but if the coach wanted it to happen it would have. Mark Eaton deserves another look. All in all we pretty much agree.
Oh I think the Pens just scored again

burghguy, good analysis. I agree with most all of them. The only differences that I would make, is that I would try to keep Laraque depending on the price. For a 4th liner, I'd keep him as a deterrent against the goonery that you see in the regular season. I think Eaton and Roberts are goners for sure. Brooks would be great to keep, but I'm not sure about his willingness to continue to play for Thierrien. Conklin most likely will be gone too. I don't see the cap space to keep Hossa, but you never know.

What does Georges Laraque do for the Penguins? All he does is fill the role of goon. He can't skate, and looks totally awkward on the ice. Jarkko Ruutu can fill the role of goon when necessary, and other players, already under contract for next year can do the dirty work as well. Hal Gill has shown the ability to step in and protect the Pens highly skilled players, as have Ryan Whitney, Ryan Malone, and to a lesser extent Tyler Kennedy. Why do we need Laraque?

In defense of Georges Laraque I would never call him a goon. (esp. not to his face lol) He's a fighter and his presence on the ice is palpable, not in the faintest way, in my opinion, to be replaced by Ruutu! Georges brings a no more BS attitude to the ice and I don't think I'm the only one that appreciates that. He and his linemates have also done a very commendable job during this playoffs with their cycling and just generally wearing down of the opponents which by the way gives our superstars another assist by letting them rest.
Form what I've seen of Georges on tv he seems like a pretty cool guy and someone that gets along with his teammates! Plus, (and this is a biggie!) he's a fan favorite! I guess the question is how much will he cost and what are the benefits? I don't think he'll cost that much and the benefits are obvious... well, at least to me they are.
