For the record, since the 2006 start of 70 - 30, the Tigers, overall, are at 129 - 137. That's 8 games under .500 in almost two full seasons.
If you look back at that point, in 2006, before things started to unravel, we had Chris Shelton at first base, Brandon Inge at third, and Craig Monroe in left as everyday players. One can argue that since we started to go with the high price/profile philosophy things have backfired (Casey/Sheffield/J Jones/Renteria/Cabrera/Willis). Also, the pitching in that time span has nose-dived for whatever reason.
By the way, just about all of these players the Tigers have obtained are career National League guys and everyone knows the National League has been far inferior to the American League over the past 12 years. So, subtract 20 pts from your career ave. if you are looking for a national league guy. Add 1 to your ERA.
I don't know what the answer is at this point. Seems to me the right thing would be to continue to groom the fine minor league talent that we have been getting. We have been building a great farm system the past 6 years, but we have been trading these guys away. Maybe we just start keeping them all the way up the ladder (witness Cleveland).
There is no quick fix and, unfortunately, even if we do the right thing, we are 2 - 3 years away, again.
