In seems odd that he would place bets on games that he wasn't officiating unless he had some insider information.  He's being paid 5k a hit for the games he picks correctly?  How could he know better than an analyst unless he had some sort of insider information about specific refs, or the game in general?  I'm willing to bet that he had at least a deal with other referess to influence a game.  That's the case, or there it something much bigger.  I hate to think this or even imagine it, but periodically I have to wonder.  What if there are league wide decissions for the refs to influence games?  I hope this isn't the case, but when money is involved, people can be willing to do anything to make a buck.

Most sites allow you to bet on small things like the number of fouls picked up by a team or the number of FTs made - Donaghy would know roughly the character of the other refs on his crew (they all work with each other all the time) and could therefore give a better prediction than most on these categories. Then he could adjust his calls to those of the other ref in order to get within the range that the high stakes gamblers were looking at.

For those that he wasn't officiating, I can only presume that Donaghy did the former or had insider info
